Chapter 8 - The Legal Guillotine

Forty-eight hours did not bring a wire transfer.

It brought four black Chevrolet Suburbans with tinted windows, pulling into the circular driveway of the Oak Brook residence at precisely eight-fifteen on Monday morning.

Ryan, still wearing the wrinkled dress shirt from the night of the gala, stumbled to the front door with an empty coffee mug in his hand. Through the side glass panels, he saw several men in dark tactical suits, accompanied by two agents in crisp gray suits carrying federal badges.

Ryan's stomach dropped into a bottomless void.

He opened the door, his voice shaking. "What... what is this?"

"Ryan Mitchell?" the lead agent inquired, flashing a credential stamped with the seal of the United States Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division. "I am Special Agent Miller. This is Special Agent Harris. We have a federal warrant for your arrest, along with a seizure order for all electronic devices, financial ledgers, and corporate records associated with Mitchell Logistics."

"Arrest?!" Ryan shrieked, backing away into the foyer. "Arrest for what?! I haven't done anything! This is harassment! Olivia Parker put you up to this!"

From behind the federal agents, Marcus Vance stepped through the doorway.

He looked entirely unbothered by the crisp morning chill, wearing a charcoal wool trench coat and holding a slim manila folder.

"Chairwoman Parker did not need to fabricate anything, Mr. Mitchell," Marcus said, his tone chillingly clinical. "When you sent that extortionate email on Saturday morning, you committed federal wire fraud under 18 U.S. Code § 1343. But that is merely the appetizer."

Marcus opened the folder, presenting a series of forensic audit reports to the federal agents.

"Over the past seventy-two hours, Vance Legal conducted a comprehensive forensic review of the private logistics contracts your firm held over the last three years. We discovered that you systematically altered shipping manifests, falsified Department of Transportation safety certifications, and embezzled approximately one point eight million dollars from your clients' escrow accounts—funds you subsequently funneled through offshore shell accounts to finance your wife’s personal jewelry and the lease on this home."

"No... that's a lie! That was standard accounting!" Ryan screamed, his hands flying to his hair.

"Your former wife, Amber Collins, doesn't seem to think so," Marcus added smoothly, delivering the coup de grâce with surgical precision.

Ryan froze. "What?"

"Mrs. Collins-Mitchell was interviewed by the United States Attorney's Office yesterday afternoon," Marcus informed him, a faint, cold smile touching his lips. "In exchange for full transactional immunity, she surrendered your private financial journals, the passwords to your encrypted drives, and two years of text messages where you explicitly instructed your warehouse managers to alter the manifest weights. She signed the affidavit at four o'clock yesterday."

Ryan’s knees gave out. He collapsed against the foyer wall, his face devoid of color, his chest heaving as if he were suffocating.

*Amber.*

The woman he had traded his family for. The woman whose honor he had defended while mocking the mother of his child.

She had sold him out in twenty-four hours to save her own skin.

"Turn around and place your hands behind your back, Mr. Mitchell," Agent Miller instructed, unholstering a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Wait! Marcus, wait!" Ryan begged, weeping openly as the cold metal ratcheted tightly around his wrists. "Talk to Olivia! Tell her I'm sorry! I'll drop everything! I won't ever ask for a dollar! I won't ever ask to see Leo! Just tell her to drop the charges! Please, Marcus! She loved me! Tell her to remember our wedding! Tell her to remember the vows!"

Marcus Vance looked down at the weeping, broken man with eyes that carried the absolute finality of an iron door slamming shut.

"Olivia Parker does not remember your vows, Mr. Mitchell," Marcus said softly. "Because to her, you were never a husband. You were simply a lesson she passed with honors."

May you like

Marcus turned and walked down the driveway without looking back once as the federal agents hauled Ryan Mitchell down the stone steps and threw him into the back of the waiting vehicle.
