Chapter 3 - The Frame of the Glass Vial

By 4:00 AM, the torrential rain had intensified into a howling gale off Lake Michigan, battering the soaring French doors of the west pavilion.

Inside the grand marble salon of the guest house, Victoria Vance sat in an emerald silk robe, sipping twenty-year-old cognac from a crystal snifter. Spread across the glass coffee table were four leather portfolios, two Swiss bank passbooks, and an open passport case containing an emergency diplomatic visa.

Beside her stood two men in tailored dark suits—private security contractors from Apex Global Logistics, armed with concealed sidearms beneath their jackets.

"The transfer clears at 6:00 AM, Miss Vance," the lead contractor said, checking his encrypted satellite watch. "Once Donna Helena’s toxicology report is certified by the Cook County coroner, Alessandro will be forced to surrender fifty percent of the maritime voting shares under the testamentary trust provisions."

Victoria smiled—a cold, beautiful, predatory smile that belonged to an apex serpent.

"Alessandro is a sentimental beast," Victoria purred, taking a slow sip of cognac. "He spent six hours mourning his mother and blaming the archivist girl. By noon tomorrow, Clara will be in federal custody for aggravated poisoning, Helena will be in the family mausoleum, and I will control eighty million dollars in deep-water shipping leases."

The massive, reinforced mahogany doors of the pavilion were blown off their hinges by a concussive hydraulic breach.

The two private security contractors drew their sidearms in half a second, but before their muzzles could level, the room was flooded with blinding tactical light.

Six of Alessandro’s senior enforcers swept through the breach, their suppressed carbines barking in synchronized, devastating double-taps.

The two Apex contractors were dropped to the marble floor, their weapons kicked away, their arms pinned behind their backs in heavy steel transport restraints within four seconds.

Victoria gasped, dropping her crystal snifter, the glass shattering against the hearth in a violent spray of amber liquor.

Alessandro Romano walked through the smoke and shattered wood.

He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal three-piece suit beneath his black wool overcoat, his presence commanding immediate, suffocating terror across the entire room.

Walking beside him was I.

I wore my dark wool coat, holding three-year-old Lily securely in my left arm, while my right hand held the red evidentiary folder containing the decrypted server logs.

Behind us walked Dr. Sarah Lin, the family physician, accompanied by two armed federal marshals.

Victoria backed against the grand limestone fireplace, her aristocratic composure disintegrating into raw, cornered panic. "Alessandro! What... what is the meaning of this barbarism? These are my private quarters!"

Alessandro stopped three paces away, looking down at her with slate-gray eyes that held zero human warmth.

"Your quarters belong to the dead, Victoria," Alessandro whispered.
