Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Estate

Over the next three months, the Romano estate in Lake Forest underwent a complete, historic transformation.
The dark, oppressive atmosphere that had poisoned the mansion during Victoria’s presence was systematically eradicated.
Alessandro ordered a complete purge of every room associated with the Vance family’s influence. The ostentatious modern decor, the cold marble urns, and the locked guest wings were stripped away, replaced by soaring architectural glass walls that flooded every hallway with clean, golden northern sunlight.
The historic four-bedroom carriage house on the bluff was completely renovated under my direct guidance.
We installed wide white oak flooring, open bookshelves filled with classic literature, and an expansive open-air playroom that opened out onto lush gardens of fragrant lavender, white hydrangeas, and ancient weeping willows overlooking the bay.
I was officially appointed as the Executive Director of the Donna Helena Romano Maternal & Child Protection Foundation—a seventy-million-dollar philanthropic trust dedicated to providing legal defense, emergency safe-haven housing, and pediatric healthcare for vulnerable single mothers across the Midwest.
Lily was thriving. She was enrolled in the elite Lake Forest Montessori Academy, excelling at the top of her class, her bright laughter and cheerful energy filling every corner of our new home.
On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning in late spring, Alessandro and I stood on the wide stone terrace of the main manor, sipping fresh roast coffee.
Down on the emerald green lawn near the garden pond, four-year-old Lily was running with energetic, fearless speed, playing tag with Barnaby, a playful golden retriever puppy Alessandro had adopted for her fourth birthday.
Lily was laughing—a clear, musical, unburdened sound that carried across the water, completely free of fear, completely free of shadows.
Alessandro walked over, wrapping his strong arms securely around my waist from behind, resting his chin gently against my shoulder.
"What are you thinking about, Clara?" Alessandro murmured softly, his voice full of deep, enduring peace.
I leaned back against his broad chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against mine.
"I was thinking about the storage room in the library, Alessandro," I answered softly, a warm, peaceful smile touching my lips. "How I thought that cold night was the end of our lives... and how a little girl with an old stuffed rabbit gave us our entire world."

Alessandro turned me in his arms, his slate-gray eyes shining with boundless, eternal devotion, and gently cupped my cheek in his warm, scarred hand.
"She didn't just give us the world, Clara," Alessandro smiled, leaning down to press his lips against mine in a slow, sacred kiss. "She brought this empire into the light."
