Chapter 6 - The Purge of the Lake Shore Syndicate

At 9:00 AM on Monday morning, the forty-fifth floor of the Vance Financial Center in downtown Chicago was placed under emergency federal quarantine.
The grand thirty-seat executive boardroom, encased in soaring architectural glass overlooking the Chicago River, was packed with the twelve members of the board of directors, six high-priced corporate defense litigators, and the senior captains of the Midwest logistics syndicate.
Marcus Vance—a sixty-year-old billionaire sociopath dressed in a bespoke pinstripe suit—sat at the head of the long obsidian table, slamming his palm onto the wood as he finalized the emergency transfer of forty million dollars to private accounts in Zurich.
"Gentlemen!" Marcus shouted, his face flushed and agitated. "The Romano alliance is fractured! With Donna Helena incapacitated, we execute the hostile takeover of the Calumet deep-water berths before the market opens on Tuesday!"
The heavy double mahogany entrance doors of the boardroom were blown open by concussive hydraulic force.
Four armed federal marshals in tactical gear swept into the room, carbines raised at the high ready, followed by Special Agent Raymond Callahan and Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed.
Every director at the table jumped to their feet in sheer terror.
Alessandro Romano strode into the boardroom wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal three-piece suit beneath a heavy black wool overcoat, his presence commanding immediate, breathless terror across the room.
Walking on his right arm was I.
I wore an elegant, tailored emerald wool power suit, my dark hair styled in a sophisticated chignon, carrying the red audit dossier beneath my arm with absolute, sovereign poise.
Behind us walked Frank Callahan, carrying four heavy steel cases stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court.
Marcus Vance froze, his gold pen slipping from his fingers, clattering loudly against the obsidian table.
"Romano...?" Marcus stammered, backing against his leather chair. "What is the meaning of this federal circus? This is a private corporate assembly!"
Frank Callahan stepped forward, slamming three thick certified probate decrees onto the center of the table with a concussive thud.
"Under emergency seizure warrants issued by Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery at 6:00 AM today, Marcus," Frank announced, his voice cutting through the room like a broadsword, "Vance Global Logistics is under active federal indictment for Attempted Premeditated Murder, Corporate Embezzlement, Fraudulent Conveyance of Maritime Assets, and Racketeering under the RICO Act."
Frank connected his tablet to the seventy-foot digital display wall.
The massive screens illuminated instantly, displaying the unedited security footage of Victoria Vance planting the digoxin, the banking flowcharts connecting Marcus's Cayman Island accounts to forty million dollars in stolen maritime tariffs, and Victoria’s sworn video confession.
The boardroom erupted into furious, panicked shouts. Directors shoved their chairs back in open horror, stepping away from Marcus Vance as if he were carrying a lethal contagion.
Marcus backed against the panoramic window, hyperventilating, his expensive veneer completely pulverized into dust. "This... this is an extortion plot! You fabricated these manifests!"
Alessandro walked slowly down the center aisle of the boardroom, stopping two feet from where Vance stood trembling.

"You sent your daughter to poison my mother, Marcus," Alessandro whispered, his voice dropping into a register of icy, lethal stillness. "You tried to destroy an innocent woman and her child to steal my docks. Your family's name is erased from this city forever."
Four federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel transport chains around Marcus Vance’s wrists and ankles, dragging the disgraced titan from his own boardroom as the entire assembly watched in stunned, condemning silence.
