Chapter 8 - The Federal Tribunal and the Grand Jury

In September, the Dirksen Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago convened for the formal trial of The United States versus Marcus Vance, Victoria Vance, and Apex Logistics.

The proceedings drew intense international media coverage, captivating the public and exposing the chilling reality of corporate assassination, staged domestic framing, and syndicate extortion that had operated behind high-society boardrooms.

Alessandro and I sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery dressed in tailored dark wool coats, holding hands firmly. Lily remained at the Lake Forest estate, playing safely in the autumn gardens with Donna Helena, Mrs. Gable, and Barnaby.

Marcus and Victoria Vance sat at the defense table in matching orange federal inmate jumpsuits.

The transformation was absolute.

Without their designer gowns, bespoke suits, and manufactured arrogance, Marcus and Victoria looked like hollow, bitter phantoms, their hands and ankles shackled in heavy steel chains that clattered loudly with every dragging step.

Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed presented one hundred and twelve exhibits of forensic digital evidence, the uncorrupted four-K security footage from sub-level two, the recovered digoxin vials, and Victoria’s unedited video confession.

When I took the witness stand on the fourth day, my testimony lasted three hours.

I spoke with calm, precise, and unshakeable clarity, recounting the threats in the library, the planted keycard, and the courage of my three-year-old daughter.

The jury deliberated for exactly twenty-four minutes.

The foreperson stood in a packed, breathless courtroom and delivered the verdict across all forty-two felony counts:

"On all counts of Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Federal Racketeering, Corporate Extortion, and Grand Larceny—Guilty on all counts."

Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery delivered the maximum statutory sentences from the bench with solemn, unyielding severity:

"Marcus Vance, Victoria Vance, you committed acts of monstrous, calculated cruelty against an innocent family to satisfy an insatiable, criminal greed," Judge Montgomery declared, her voice echoing through the silent hall. "You are hereby sentenced to Life in Prison Without the Possibility of Parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute."

The gavel struck the sound block with concussive finality.

Marcus and Victoria collapsed onto the defense table, weeping in bitter, total ruin as the armed federal marshals moved in to drag the disgraced predators down the subterranean holding corridor forever.

Alessandro and I stood up, walked down the center aisle of the courtroom hand-in-hand with Special Agent Callahan, and stepped through the double mahogany doors into the bright autumn sunlight, leaving the darkness behind us forever.
