Chapter 1 - The Holiday Dinner That Blew My Ten-Year Cover (Continued)

Mark leaned down, his voice barely a breath against the ambient murmur of the dining room.

"Valkyrie Actual," he whispered.

The air between us seemed to turn instantly to ice. The name wasn't on any public record, wasn't listed in any open-source military directory, and carried a mandatory twenty-year federal prison sentence under Title 18 for unauthorized civilian utterance.

I didn't blink. I didn't break eye contact. My expression remained the flat, unremarkable mask of a woman who filed logistics manifests for a living.

"Sit down and eat your dinner, Petty Officer," I replied, my voice dropping an octave into a low, measured timbre that had cleared tactical operations centers across three continents.

Mark snapped to absolute rigid attention, his heels clicking together softly against the oak floor. His right hand twitched, instinctively fighting the urge to render a formal military salute in the middle of his mother's dining room.

"Mark?" Aunt Susan's voice sliced through the tension, high and abrasive. She strutted over, her gold bracelets clinking against her champagne glass. "What are you whispering to her for? Clara, honestly, don't bother my son with your boring office chatter. Mark just returned from a highly classified deployment. He operates at a level you couldn't possibly comprehend."

Mark slowly turned his head toward his mother. The look in his eyes was not familial warmth; it was the hollow, horrified disbelief of a soldier watching a civilian tap on an unexploded ordnance.

"Mom," Mark rasped, his throat dry as bone. "Be quiet."

Susan blinked, her mouth half-open in shock. "Excuse me? Mark, how dare you speak to me like that! I'm your mother! I was simply reminding Clara that while she sits at a desk answering phones, you are out there risking your life for this country!"

Mark looked back at me, his chest heaving beneath his fitted civilian sweater. "Three months ago, in the Helmand valley... extraction team Echo-Seven was pinned down under heavy mortar fire on Ridge Four. The tactical operations commander on the satellite radio had a voice so calm she sounded like she was reading a weather report. She routed two gunships through a zero-visibility sandstorm and brought eleven of us out alive."

Mark took a half-step back, his voice shaking with absolute conviction as the entire dining room fell into a dead silence.

"That voice was Clara."
