Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Light

One year after the holiday dinner that shattered a ten-year cover story, the summer sun set over the Potomac River, painting the sky and the Washington monuments in breathtaking strokes of violet, amber, and molten gold.

On the rooftop terrace of the Directorate headquarters in Langley, a gentle evening breeze carried the clean scent of pine trees and river water across the stone deck.

A small gathering of veteran commanders, intelligence directors, General Vance, and Chief Mark Sterling stood around a cedar table, sharing quiet stories and raising glasses of sparkling water to another successful year of global peace.

I stood by the glass balustrade, wearing an ordinary linen jacket, holding a cup of black tea, watching the city lights flicker to life across the capital.

Beside me on the table sat my encrypted satellite phone—silent, secure, its networks quiet.

Mark walked over, leaning against the railing beside me, looking out at the illuminated dome of the Capitol in the distance.

"Do you ever miss having a normal life, Clara?" Mark asked softly. "Where people know what you do?"

I took a slow sip of tea, feeling an immense, profound peace settle over my soul.

I looked out over the vast, glowing skyline of a free nation sleeping peacefully beneath the stars—millions of families gathered in warmth, completely untroubled by the storms of the world.

"This is my normal life, Mark," I answered with a heart full of absolute, unbreakable resolve. "We stand in the shadows so they can live in the light. And there is no greater honor on earth."

Mark smiled, raising his glass gently against mine with a soft, resonant chime.

"To the shield," Mark said.

May you like

"To the light," I replied.

Together, we turned back toward the warm, quiet sanctuary of our team—an unbreakable line of guardians who watched over the world with honor, truth, and eternal vigilance.
