Chapter 5 - The Unmasking of the Director

General Raymond Vance strode through the front entrance, wearing his four-star service dress uniform under a heavy charcoal trench coat, flanked by two senior intelligence aides carrying encrypted satellite briefcases.
General Vance did not look at Susan. He did not look at the rest of the family huddling on the stairs.
He walked directly to where I stood in the center of the shattered dining room, stopped two paces away, and rendered a formal, rigid salute.
"Director Lin," General Vance said, his baritone filling the house. "The President and the National Security Council have convened an emergency session at the Pentagon. Transport Falcon One is touching down on the golf course behind the property right now."
Susan’s voice rose from the stairs—a cracked, pathetic squeak that had lost every shred of its former arrogance.
"General...?" Susan stammered, pointing a shaking finger at me. "You're... you're saluting my niece? She’s a secretary! She answers phones at a freight company!"
General Vance turned slowly, looking down at Susan with eyes that could have frozen open water.
"Madam," General Vance said, each word falling like an iron weight. "The woman standing before you is Dr. Clara Lin, the Senior Director of the Directorate of Special Activities. She holds direct command authority over every clandestine Tier 1 special mission unit in the United States military. For the past decade, she has preserved the security of this nation while you lived in luxury beneath the shield she built."
General Vance turned back to Mark, who stood at rigid attention beside the door.
"Petty Officer First Class Mark Sterling," the General addressed him.
"Sir!" Mark barked, snapping his shoulders back.
"Your unit owes its survival to Director Lin's operational command. Step into line and prepare to assist with the extraction convoy."
May you like
"Yes, Sir!" Mark replied without a second of hesitation, his eyes burning with absolute pride and reverence.
Susan looked at her son, then looked at me, her mouth opening and closing in total, agonizing humiliation. The woman she had spent ten years mocking, belittling, and calling an uneducated failure was the very sovereign authority who held her son's life in her hands.
