Chapter 4 - The Audit of the Patriarch

By 8:00 AM, the executive conference room on the tenth floor of Children’s Harbor Medical Center was locked under high-tier federal security protocols.
Special Agent Raymond Callahan of the FBI’s Public Corruption Task Force and Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed sat at the long table alongside Frank Callahan and Dr. Sarah Lin.
Spread across the table were seventy pages of unsealed banking records from the Cayman Islands, the original maternal delivery logs from the Oak Brook clinic, and the certified genetic sequencing results Dr. Lin had run at 4:00 AM.
Child: Caleb Thomas Vale.
Biological Mother: Dr. Emma Catherine Carter (Probability: 99.999%).
Biological Father: Julian Alexander Vale (Probability: 99.999%).
"The paper trail is airtight, Julian," Special Agent Callahan reported, tapping a certified signature card. "Arthur Vale utilized five million dollars in laundered casino revenue to finance the private clinic in Illinois. Marcus Vance—Arthur’s chief enforcer—personally threatened Dr. Carter’s brother in Boston, while forging Julian’s corporate power-of-attorney to execute the gestational transfer."
"What is Marcus Vance’s current location?" I asked, standing by the window overlooking Boston Harbor.
"Marcus Vance arrived at Arthur’s Marblehead estate two hours ago," Callahan answered. "They are convening an extraordinary session of the New England Maritime Council at noon. Arthur plans to present forged legal documents declaring Julian medically and mentally unfit due to 'domestic instability,' transferring sole guardianship of Caleb and the four-hundred-million-dollar trust to Marcus as interim conservator."
Emma stood beside me, dressed in an elegant dark wool coat over her scrubs, her posture radiating the quiet, unyielding authority of a mother who had reclaimed her soul.
"He tried to erase me three years ago, Julian," Emma said softly, her eyes blazing with righteous fire. "He will not touch our son again."

I turned to Frank Callahan and the federal prosecutors.
"Assemble the federal marshals," I commanded. "Fuel the private transport at Logan. At noon, we take the council back."
