Chapter 5 - The Council at Marblehead

The grand stone manor of the Vale family in Marblehead stood perched atop the granite bluffs, overlooking the cold, churning gray expanse of Massachusetts Bay.

Inside the two-story limestone ballroom, thirty senior captains, maritime logistics directors, and appellate judges sat around a massive mahogany table.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Vale—seventy-two years old, with silver hair, cold reptilian eyes, and the tailored pinstripe suit of an untouchable mob patriarch. Beside him stood Marcus Vance, holding a leather-bound portfolio containing the emergency conservatorship decrees.

"Gentlemen," Arthur announced, his gravelly voice echoing off the vaulted timber ceilings. "My son Julian has demonstrated dangerous emotional volatility. Last night, he abandoned his executive duties at the port to stage a scene at a public hospital over an infant. For the stability of the Vale Maritime Consortium, the council must ratify the transfer of executive authority to Marcus Vance until the child reaches legal majority."

The heavy double oak doors of the ballroom were blown open with concussive force.

Four armed federal marshals in tactical gear swept through the threshold, followed by twenty tactical operatives from my private security division, their carbines held at the high ready.

The room fell into an absolute, paralyzed silence.

I walked into the ballroom wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal three-piece suit beneath a heavy black wool overcoat, my presence commanding immediate, breathless terror across the room.

Walking beside me, holding her head high with sovereign grace, was Dr. Emma Carter.

Behind us walked Special Agent Raymond Callahan and Frank Callahan, carrying four heavy steel cases stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court.

Arthur Vale jumped to his feet, his cane striking the parquet floor with a sharp crack. "Julian! What is the meaning of this insolence? You bring federal agents into my ancestral home?"

"Your home ceased to be ancestral the day you stole my son, Arthur," I said, my baritone cutting through the room like a broadsword.
