Chapter 7 - The Recovery of the Heir

By Tuesday morning, the storm over Boston had cleared, leaving behind a brilliant, cloudless sapphire sky that flooded the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with warm golden sunlight.
Dr. Sarah Lin and her medical team stood beside Caleb’s crib, smiling broadly as they disconnected the last IV infusion pump.
Caleb was completely recovered.
His fever had vanished, his skin was rosy and warm, and his bright gray-blue eyes followed every movement in the room with energetic, joyful curiosity. He was kicking his small legs happily against the mattress, babbling cheerfully as he reached his tiny hands toward Emma.
Emma walked to the side of the crib, her eyes glistening with tears of pure, unburdened joy.
With trembling, sacred gentleness, Emma reached down and lifted our six-month-old son into her arms, holding him against her chest for the first time in his life without fear, without guards, and without secrets.
Caleb immediately snuggled into her neck, his tiny fingers grabbing a lock of her dark hair, letting out a soft, contented coo.
Emma buried her face in his soft cheek, weeping with the raw, miraculous relief of a mother who had fought through three years of darkness to hold her baby.
"My sweet boy..." Emma sobbed softly. "My beautiful, brave Caleb... Mommy is here. Mommy will never leave you again."
I stepped beside them, wrapping my massive, protective arms around both Emma and Caleb, pulling my family into a warm, unbreakable circle of light.
Caleb looked up at me, letting out a delighted baby giggle, his small hand reaching over to touch my cheek.

"Look at him, Julian," Emma smiled through her tears, looking up into my eyes. "He knows his father."
"He knows his mother, Emma," I whispered, kissing her forehead, then kissing our son's soft hair. "And he is finally home."
