Chapter 2 - The Intrusion of the Patriarch

The air rushed out of Preston’s chest in a sharp, pathetic wheeze. He sprawled across the sofa, his scotch glass shattering on the Persian rug, the dark liquid pooling like spilled blood across the wool.
“You—you crazy—” Preston gasped, clutching his bruised wrist, staring up at her with eyes wide in sudden, unadulterated terror. He hadn’t expected a fight. In his world, women like Giulietta were decorative chess pieces to be moved at the patriarch's whim.
Before Preston could push himself up from the cushions, the heavy deadbolt of the bridal-suite door clicked loudly.
The door unlocked and swung wide open.
Warren Hale entered. The patriarch of the Hale syndicate—a man whose silver hair, immaculate tailoring, and cold, calculating gaze had ruled the eastern seaboard for decades—stepped into the room. He took one look at his son sprawled on the sofa, then at the golf club in Giulietta’s hand, and his face mottled with a dark, furious crimson.
He pointed angrily at Giulietta.
“Put that down. You’re marrying into my family.”
Warren’s voice carried the absolute authority of a king addressing a rebellious peasant. He didn't ask what happened; he assumed, as he always did, that the Hales held all the cards, and any disruption was merely a minor insolence to be punished.
Giulietta didn't flinch. She slowly lowered her arms, let go of the golf club, and dropped it casually at Preston’s feet, where it clattered loudly against the floorboards.
“No,” Giulietta said quietly.
Warren frowned, stepping further into the room. “Excuse me? Do you realize who is standing in front of you? Your father gave you to us. You have no voice here.”
“Your son was marrying into mine,” Giulietta finished smoothly.
Warren froze.
The silence in the bridal suite suddenly grew dense, heavy with a sudden, suffocating tension. Before Warren could demand an explanation, the long, private hallway behind Giulietta filled with the sound of heavy, synchronized footsteps.
Shadows spilled across the threshold.
One by one, elite Marconi capos and armed bodyguards stepped into the room, their dark suits pressing in from the corridor, their holstered firearms visible beneath their jackets. They didn't look like guests at a wedding; they looked like an execution squad taking possession of a conquered city.
Warren’s eyes darted to the armed men blocking the exit. His hand twitched toward his inner breast pocket, his instincts as an underworld boss flaring to life.
Two massive bodyguards stepped forward, placing themselves between Warren and the door.
Yet, as Giulietta watched the patriarch's face, she noticed something profoundly strange.
Warren wasn't staring at the armed Marconi capos blocking the hallway. He wasn't looking at Giulietta, who held total tactical control of the room.

His eyes were locked entirely on his son, Preston.
And the absolute, bone-chilling fear on Warren Hale’s face appeared only after he realized exactly what his son had already said out loud just moments before.
