Chapter 5 - The Banquet of Shadows

While the Hales were being escorted down to the stone-lined cellars beneath the manor, the reality of the situation finally filtered down to the grand ballroom upstairs.

The string quartet had stopped playing. The murmur of elite conversation had dissolved into an anxious, suffocating hush. Five hundred of the city’s most powerful politicians, judges, and underworld figures sat at their tables, staring at the empty stage where the bride and groom were supposed to appear.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the front of the ballroom swung open.

A platoon of Marconi capos marched into the room, lining the perimeter walls with quiet, menacing efficiency. At their center walked Giulietta Marconi.

She had removed her veil, letting her dark hair fall in cascading waves around her shoulders. She wore her wedding dress like battle armor, her posture straight, her gaze sweeping across the terrified crowd of elites who had spent the evening currying favor with the Hales.

At the center table, the mayor of the city dropped his crystal glass, watching in horror as he realized the power dynamic had completely inverted in the span of an hour.

Giulietta walked up the steps of the stage, approached the podium, and picked up the wireless microphone.

The sound system gave a low, resonant hum as she brought the mic to her lips.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Giulietta’s voice echoed cleanly through every speaker in the grand hall. “Thank you for attending tonight’s celebration. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen... structural failures on the part of the Hale family, the wedding has been canceled.”

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom. Several high-society matrons pressed their hands to their chests.

“However,” Giulietta continued, her tone remaining perfectly calm and conversational, “as the new sole majority shareholder of Hale Global Logistics and all associated maritime properties, I am pleased to announce that dinner will be served as planned. Please, eat up. The Marconi syndicate is picking up the tab.”

She set the microphone down on the podium, turned on her heel, and walked off the stage, leaving the city’s elite staring at their plates in stunned, petrified silence.
