Chapter 3 - Shadows at the Construction Site

Three weeks flew by in a dizzying blur of architectural blueprints, late-night phone calls, and clandestine dates in hidden Chicago venues. Nora’s firm was thriving, the Arden House renovation was ahead of schedule, and her relationship with Adrian had deepened into something fierce, electric, and entirely unspoken.
They hadn’t slept together. They hadn’t even kissed. Yet the tension between them was so thick it could cut glass. Adrian treated her like fragile porcelain, a stark contrast to his usual ruthless persona.
Until a freezing Tuesday morning in December.
Nora was walking through the gutted lobby of the Arden House hotel, hardhat on, pointing out structural flaws to her site manager, when the heavy steel doors at the front entrance slammed open.
Three heavy-set men in leather jackets strode in. They didn’t look like construction workers. They looked like predators.
“Nora Ellison?” the lead man barked, his face scarred by an old jagged knife wound across his jawline.
“Yes? Can I help you?” Nora stepped forward, clipboard clutched to her chest.
“Tell your boyfriend Vale that the North Side docks aren't up for negotiation,” the man spat, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed. He reached out, his thick, calloused hand gripping Nora’s arm so hard the metal clipboard dropped to the concrete floor with a deafening crash. “Next time, we won’t just send a message.”
Nora gasped in pain, twisting her wrist. “I don’t know what you’re talking about! Let go of me!”
Before the man could tighten his grip, a blur of motion erupted from the shadows near the elevator shaft.
A heavy hand clamped onto the thug’s wrist. There was a sickening *crack* of bone breaking under pressure.
The man shrieked, releasing Nora instantly.
Adrian Vale materialized out of the gloom like an avenging angel. His face was devoid of all human emotion—a mask of absolute, terrifying fury. His eyes were completely black.
Without a word, Adrian slammed his fist into the man’s jaw. The thug flew backward, crashing through a stack of drywall. The other two men lunged forward, but Adrian’s private security detail—men Nora hadn't even noticed were shadowing them—tackled them to the ground in a flurry of muffled grunts and cold efficiency.
Adrian turned back to Nora. His chest heaved. He grabbed her shoulders, his hands shaking slightly—not from fear, but from adrenaline.
“Are you hurt?” he demanded, his voice a low, ragged rasp.
“I—I’m fine,” Nora stammered, staring at the blood staining the knuckles of Adrian’s right hand. “Adrian, who were they? What is going on?”
Adrian closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against hers for a brief, desperate second.

“They are ghosts from a war I thought I finished years ago,” Adrian whispered. He pulled back, his jaw locked. “You’re staying with me tonight. No arguments.”
