Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

By sunrise, the penthouse was quiet again, save for the hum of air purifiers scrubbing the smoke from the air. Federal agents and private cleanup crews worked efficiently in the corridors below.
Viktor Vance—the aging, ruthless warlord of the North Side—was currently tied to a chair in the underground parking garage, waiting for Adrian.
Adrian stood in the master bathroom, washing dried blood off his knuckles under the cold tap.
Nora stood in the doorway, watching him. Her hands were steady now. Her walls of control weren’t gone—they had just been rebuilt, stronger and more resilient than ever before.
“Is it over?” she asked softly.
Adrian turned off the water, grabbed a towel, and dried his hands. He walked over to her, stopping just inches away.
“Vance is gone. The syndicate’s old guard has been neutralized, arrested, or put on a plane out of the country,” Adrian said, his voice steady. “The Vale family is officially legitimate. No more shadows. No more war.”
Nora let out a breath she felt like she’d been holding for six weeks. “And us?”
Adrian reached out. This time, he didn’t hesitate. He framed her face with both hands, his thumbs gently brushing her cheekbones.
“We start over,” he whispered.
Later that afternoon, Adrian drove Nora down to the newly renovated Arden House hotel. The grand opening was a massive success, the interior design a stunning masterpiece of warm limestone, organic flow, and absolute sanctuary.
As they stood in the breathtaking lobby, surrounded by laughing investors, journalists, and admiring clients, Adrian slipped a heavy, antique platinum ring onto Nora’s left ring finger.
