Chapter 4 - The Iron Fortress

The penthouse at the top of the Wabash Meridian Tower was a fortress disguised as a luxury home.
Bulletproof glass windows. Private elevator codes that changed daily. Armed guards stationed discreetly in the service stairwells.
Nora paced the expansive, minimalist living room while Adrian poured a glass of whiskey at the wet bar. The adrenaline of the attack at the construction site was finally wearing off, leaving behind a cold, hollow ache in her chest.
“You lied to me,” Nora said, turning to face him. “You aren’t just a real estate developer. You’re... you’re running the syndicate, aren’t you? The Vale family isn't just a corporate name.”
Adrian took a slow sip of his whiskey. He didn’t deny it. He didn’t look away.
“My father built an empire on blood, extortion, and cement, Nora,” Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “When he died, I took over to dismantle it. To legitimize it. But old enemies don't want legitimacy. They want the old ways back. And today, they found out about you.”
Nora’s breath caught. “Because of me? They targeted me to get to you?”
“Yes.” Adrian set his glass down so hard the crystal cracked. He crossed the room in two massive strides, grabbing her shoulders. “Which is why you are going to pack a bag, and you are going to let my men take you out of Chicago until this is resolved.”
“No!” Nora shoved his chest, shocking them both. “I am not running away like a coward! I built my life, my business, and my reputation with my own two hands. I won’t hide in a hole just because some thugs from your past crawled out of the woodwork!”
Adrian stared at her, stunned by her fierce defiance. Then, a dark, dangerous spark ignited in his eyes.
“You stubborn, magnificent fool,” he muttered.
He didn’t push her away. Instead, his hand slid up the back of her neck, tangling in her hair, pulling her flush against his solid, unyielding chest.
“If you stay, you are stepping directly into the crosshairs of a war you don't understand,” Adrian warned, his lips brushing against her ear.

“Then show me,” Nora whispered, looking up into his dark, troubled eyes. “Show me everything.”
