Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Light

Two years after the rainy afternoon Vivienne Rossi locked her hands around my throat in a dim corridor, the Long Island estate was alive with the vibrant, joyful sounds of a real family home.

It was an exquisite Sunday afternoon in late August. The golden sunset painted the waters of Long Island Sound and the rolling emerald lawns in breathtaking strokes of violet, amber, and rose.

A long cedar dining table was set upon the wide stone terrace overlooking the gardens, decorated with fresh hydrangeas, platters of handmade pasta, fresh local seafood, sweet roasted corn, and a massive homemade three-tier strawberry shortcake prepared by our kitchen team.

Mrs. Gable, Marco Caruso, Caleb Stone, our dedicated household staff, and our closest friends sat around the table, their cheerful conversation and acoustic Italian guitar music drifting through the open French doors of the drawing room.

Down on the emerald grass near the garden pond, five-year-old Emma was running with energetic, fearless speed, playing tag with Barnaby, who sprinted across the clover with joyful power before trotting back to drop a tennis ball proudly at her feet.

Emma was laughing—a clear, powerful, musical sound that carried across the water—her dark curls bouncing in the warm evening breeze, her childhood restored to pure, unburdened brilliance.

Lorenzo and I stood by the limestone balustrade, watching our daughter in the golden light.

Lorenzo wore an ordinary linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his wedding ring catching the evening sun, his strong arms wrapped securely around my waist from behind, holding me close against his chest.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" Lorenzo murmured softly into my ear.

I leaned back against his broad chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against mine.

I touched the pearls resting against my collarbone, looking out across the vast, sparkling expanse of the sound where the white sailboats glided peacefully toward the open horizon under a cloudless sky.

"I was thinking about the words Emma said on the telephone, Lorenzo," I answered softly, a warm, peaceful smile touching my lips. "When she climbed onto your chair and told you that someone had hurt her mommy."

Lorenzo turned me gently in his arms, his slate-gray eyes shining with boundless, eternal devotion, and cupped my face in his warm, strong hands.

"She gave me the greatest treasure in the world, Elena," Lorenzo smiled, leaning down to press his lips against mine in a slow, sacred kiss. "She gave me my family."

Emma came sprinting up the terrace steps, out of breath and beaming with joy, holding a small bouquet of wild daisies she had picked from the lawn, throwing her small arms around both of our waists in a fierce, loving hug.

"Papa! Mama! Look!" Emma giggled, handing the flowers to me. "Barnaby says he wants to eat cake at the big table tonight!"

Lorenzo and I knelt down together on the warm stone terrace, scooping our daughter into our arms, holding all three of us close against each other as Barnaby rested his golden head proudly against our knees.

"The whole cake belongs to you, our brave little princess," Lorenzo smiled, kissing Emma’s soft, glowing cheek, then kissing my lips. "Every single piece."

The evening sun dipped below the western bluffs, bathing the estate in an eternal, sovereign warmth.

The hands around the throat were gone forever, the deleted footage had been restored into the light of justice, the traitors were locked in the dark, and the sanctuary they had built with their own hands stood strong, open, sovereign, and filled with a lifetime of love, truth, and unbroken peace.
