Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Estate

Over the next three months, the Duca estate in Long Island underwent a profound, historic transformation.

The dark, oppressive atmosphere that had poisoned the mansion during Vivienne’s presence was systematically eradicated.

Lorenzo ordered a complete purge of every room associated with the Rossi family’s influence. The ostentatious modern decor, the cold marble urns, and the locked guest wings were stripped away, replaced by soaring architectural glass walls that flooded every hallway with clean, golden northern sunlight.

The east corridor—the hall where Vivienne had tried to take my life—was completely remodeled.

The heavy plaster was replaced by warm white oak paneling, and wide French doors were installed, opening out onto a sprawling terrace filled with blooming white jasmine, lavender, and climbing hydrangeas.

In the center of the terrace, Lorenzo had a magnificent cedar playhouse constructed for Emma, complete with miniature furniture, a stained-glass window, and a small wooden plaque on the door that read: Emma’s Kingdom.

I was officially appointed as the Executive Director of the Duca Family Heritage and Child Advocacy Foundation—a seventy-million-dollar philanthropic trust dedicated to providing legal protection, safe housing, and emergency healthcare for vulnerable mothers and children across the Eastern Seaboard.

On a bright, sunny Saturday morning in late spring, Lorenzo and I stood on the wide stone terrace overlooking the gardens.

Down on the emerald lawn near the garden fountain, four-year-old Emma was running with energetic, fearless speed, playing tag with Barnaby, a playful golden retriever puppy Lorenzo had adopted for her fourth birthday.

Emma was laughing—a clear, musical, unburdened sound that carried across the gardens, completely free of fear, completely free of shadows.

Lorenzo walked over, wrapping his strong arms securely around my waist from behind, resting his chin gently against my shoulder.

"What are you thinking about, Elena?" Lorenzo murmured softly, his voice full of deep, enduring peace.

I leaned back against his broad chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against mine.

"I was thinking about the phone on your desk, Lorenzo," I answered softly, a warm, peaceful smile touching my lips. "How I thought my life was ending in that corridor... and how a three-year-old girl with a broken rabbit brought an entire empire home."

Lorenzo turned me in his arms, his slate-gray eyes shining with boundless, eternal devotion, and gently cupped my cheek in his warm, scarred hand.

"She didn't just bring an empire home, Elena," Lorenzo smiled, leaning down to press his lips against mine. "She brought me my whole world."
