Chapter 9 - The Vows on the Water

That October, on a warm, sun-drenched Saturday afternoon, the private gardens of the Long Island estate were decorated with thousands of white orchids and wild jasmine.

It was our wedding day.

There were no syndicate treaties, no forced alliances, and no fear.

There were only sixty of our closest friends, our loyal staff, Mrs. Gable, Marco Caruso, Caleb Stone, and the working families who had stood with us through the storm.

An antique cedar arbor adorned with cascading white roses stood at the edge of the limestone terrace overlooking the sparkling blue expanse of Long Island Sound.

I walked down the petal-strewn aisle in an exquisite, flowing gown of ivory French lace, my dark hair styled in soft waves adorned with small pearl pins, my mother-in-law’s restored pearls glowing proudly against my throat.

Walking before me, looking healthy, radiant, and full of unshadowed childhood happiness, was four-year-old Emma, acting as our flower girl, wearing a pretty yellow linen dress and tossing rose petals from a silver basket with a proud, beaming smile.

Beside Emma trotted Barnaby, wearing a clean leather collar adorned with a small white silk bow.

Lorenzo stood at the altar in a bespoke black tuxedo, his slate-gray eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that silenced the world.

When I reached his side, he took both of my hands into his, his fingers strong, warm, and trembling with sacred devotion.

Father Antonio, a kind parish priest who had known Lorenzo’s mother for forty years, smiled warmly as he raised his hands in blessing.

Lorenzo took a slow, deep breath, his voice steady, rich, and vibrating with absolute, eternal love:

"Elena," Lorenzo said, his eyes shining with pure peace. "For years, I believed that power was measured by the walls I built and the fear I commanded. You walked into my life, you stood against cruelty with unbroken courage, and you showed me that true power is the honor that protects the innocent and the love that refuses to let darkness win. Today, before God and our daughter, I give you my life, my name, and my soul. I promise to stand between you and every storm, to cherish your brilliant heart, and to love you and Emma with an unbroken, sovereign truth for all the days of our lives."

Tears of pure, radiant joy spilled down my cheeks as I slipped the heavy platinum band onto his finger.

"Lorenzo," I smiled through my tears, my voice full of boundless peace. "You tore down the walls of my fear to give my daughter and me a real home. You showed me what a real protector looks like. I choose you today, tomorrow, and for all the days of our lives."

Father Antonio raised his hands in a quiet blessing. "By the power of love, truth, and restored honor, I pronounce you husband and wife."

Lorenzo pulled me into his arms, lifting me slightly off the stone terrace, and kissed me—a deep, sacred promise of an unbroken future built on truth, courage, and unconditional love.

Emma let out a joyful cheer, running forward to wrap her small arms around our legs, giggling as Lorenzo scooped both of us up into his embrace, holding his wife and daughter against his beating heart as the sun turned the water to molten gold.
