Chapter 1 - The Sweet Beginning and the Sudden Crash

The Grand Meridian Ballroom gleamed under the soft radiance of three hundred crystal chandeliers. It was the wedding of the year, uniting Alexander Vance, a billionaire tech tycoon, and Vivienne Sterling, a socialite whose elegance matched the opulence of the evening. The air was thick with the scent of imported white roses, expensive perfume, and the quiet murmurs of admiration from two hundred elite guests.

At the center of the polished mahogany floor stood the wedding cake—a towering, seven-tier masterpiece of white fondant, spun sugar, and delicate edible orchids, crafted by a world-renowned pastry chef. It looked too magnificent to consume, a work of art symbolizing a bright, unblemished future.

Alexander stood beside Vivienne, holding a crystal flute of champagne, a soft smile gracing his lips. Across the room, his six-year-old daughter, Chloe, sat quietly at a family table, wearing a pale blue dress that matched her wide, observant eyes. Chloe had been unusually subdued all evening, her small fingers nervously twisting the lace of her napkin.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the master of ceremonies announced into the microphone, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “If we could have the bride and groom step forward for the cutting of the cake!”

Polite applause rippled through the room. Alexander offered his arm to Vivienne, and together they began to walk toward the magnificent confection, silver-handled cake knife resting on a velvet tray beside it.

Suddenly, a small blur darted from the side of the room.

Before anyone could react, six-year-old Chloe sprinted across the polished floor with surprising speed. Her small frame slammed directly into the low staging table holding the multi-tier masterpiece.

Crash.

The sound of shattering glass plates, splintering wood, and collapsing tiers echoed through the ballroom. The seven-tier wedding cake tipped violently and smashed face-first onto the marble floor. White fondant exploded like a sweet bomb, sending sticky waves of buttercream, red velvet sponge, and sugar orchids splattering across the pristine floor and onto the expensive shoes of the front-row guests.

The ballroom erupted.

Gasps, shrieks, and shouts of outrage ricocheted off the walls. Several elderly relatives clutched their chests, while high-society matrons leaped backward to save their designer gowns from the spreading mess.

Alexander stopped dead in his tracks, his charming smile vanishing instantly. A dark, furious flush crept up his neck. Humiliated and furious in front of his business partners and new in-laws, he strode across the sticky floor toward his daughter.

“Chloe!” Alexander barked, his voice sharp enough to cut glass. He grabbed her small upper arm, pulling her upright with more force than he intended. “What on earth do you think you are doing?! Look at this! You have completely ruined your stepmother’s wedding!”

Chloe didn't pull away. Instead, she began to shake violently. Large, hot tears spilled over her eyelashes, tracking clean paths through the white frosting dust on her cheeks. She was trembling so hard her teeth chattered, her chest heaving as if she had just run a marathon.

“Daddy... daddy, stop,” she sobbed, gasping for air. She pointed a tiny, trembling finger past her father’s shoulder, aiming straight toward the catering service line near the heavy double doors.

Alexander paused, his grip loosening slightly as he looked at the sheer terror in her eyes.

Through her tears, Chloe whispered words that froze the blood in Alexander’s veins:

“I saw that man... put something inside the cake...”
