Chapter 8 - The Return to Peace

By noon, the news broke across national media networks: “Vance Technologies Executive Richard Vance Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Embezzlement and Cold-Case Murder Investigation.”
The corporate board of Vance Technologies convened an emergency session, unanimously stripping Richard of all titles, voting rights, and equity shares, while officially establishing an independent forensic audit into the foundation's operations—naming Elena Vance’s rigorous investigative notes as the foundational blueprint for the cleanup.
Alexander didn't watch the news reports.
He returned to the fortress-like estate on Lake Michigan, walking through the heavy front doors into the quiet warmth of the foyer.
Chloe was sitting on the living room rug, building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks, completely absorbed in her game.
Hearing footsteps, she looked up, her wide, observant eyes locking onto her father. She scrambled to her feet and ran across the room, throwing her arms around his waist.
“Daddy! You’re home!” she beamed, looking up at him with unblemished joy.
Alexander knelt down, wrapping his arms securely around his little girl, burying his face in her dark curls. The terror of the wedding night, the poisoned cake, and the ghosts of the past finally melted away, replaced by the unbreakable, sovereign warmth of a father holding his world safely in his arms.
“I’m home, bug,” Alexander whispered, kissing her forehead. “And the bad men are gone forever. No one is ever going to hurt us again.”

Chloe smiled brightly, grabbing his hand and pulling him toward her wooden block castle. “Good! Because you have to help me build the royal guard tower before lunch!”
Alexander laughed—a deep, resonant sound that filled the sunlit room—and sat down on the rug beside her.
