Chapter 5 - The Digital Vault

Back at the Vance estate—a heavily fortified modern fortress overlooking Lake Michigan—the atmosphere was thick with tension and quiet preparation.
Alexander carried a sleeping Chloe upstairs, tucked her safely into her bed under the watchful eye of her trusted nanny, and locked the bedroom door from the outside. Then, he descended to his private underground home office—a high-tech command center equipped with multiple monitors, encrypted servers, and direct access to global financial databases.
He didn't call the police. He knew better. If Richard Vance had infiltrated St. Jude Hospital three years ago and manipulated local catering networks tonight, the local authorities were either compromised or entirely outmatched.
He sat down in his ergonomic leather chair and plugged a high-speed data drive into his primary terminal.
“Accessing mainframe,” the computer’s artificial voice chimed softly.
Alexander bypassed the standard corporate firewall and accessed the deep-storage archives of the Vance Foundation—the exact financial files Elena had been auditing before her death.
For two hours, he scrolled through lines of code, offshore wire transfers, and internal board memos. The trail was buried deep, hidden beneath layers of shell companies in the Caymans and Panama. But as a master software architect, Alexander knew how to read the digital fingerprints left behind by lazy embezzlers.
There it was.
A hidden folder labeled Project St. Jude.
He clicked it open. Inside were medical procurement receipts, hush-money payouts to former hospital administrators, and—most damning of all—an internal security log from the exact night Elena died.
The security log showed badge access to Elena’s private hospital wing.
The badge holder wasn't a random assassin. It was registered to Richard Vance’s personal chief of security—a man with a permanent, jagged scar running down the left side of his neck.
The man Chloe had seen in the hallway. The man who had poisoned the wedding cake.

Alexander leaned back in his chair, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. They thought they were hunting him. They thought he was an unsuspecting target caught off guard by a ruined party.
They didn't realize they had just woken a sleeping giant.
