Chapter 4 - The Billionaire’s Counter-Attack

By 6:00 AM, the Chicago financial district was waking up to a storm of unprecedented proportions.

Inside the sleek, glass-walled boardroom on the top floor of Whitmore Tower, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Three senior corporate lawyers, sweating despite the climate-controlled air, sat around the mahogany table staring at their laptops in stunned disbelief.

At the head of the table sat Daniel Whitmore. He had changed into a fresh black tailored suit, but the dark circles beneath his eyes and the cold, unyielding set of his jaw betrayed the fact that he hadn't slept a wink.

"Mr. Whitmore," stammered Arthur Pendelton, the senior partner of Whitmore’s legal counsel, adjusting his glasses nervously. "Are you entirely certain you want to proceed with this? Freezing the Hale family trust isn't just a legal maneuver—it’s a declaration of open warfare. Senator Hale has deep ties to the federal judiciary. If we trigger this asset freeze without airtight evidence, his allies on the bench could slap us with retaliatory injunctions that could paralyze our upcoming tech acquisitions."

Daniel didn't blink. He slid a secure encrypted tablet across the table.

"Look at screen three, Arthur," Daniel commanded, his voice deadpan.

Arthur tapped the screen. Within seconds, high-definition, multi-angle security footage from the rooftop of Whitmore Tower began to play. The video showed the gala in the background—the string quartet, the laughing guests—and then zoomed in with crystal-clear audio and visual clarity on the exact moment Victoria Hale stepped forward, placed both hands on Elena Ramirez’s chest, and shoved her backward into the dark abyss.

The room went dead silent. You could hear the hum of the air conditioner and the distant wail of morning traffic far below.

Arthur swallowed hard, his face turning pale. He looked up from the tablet to Daniel, realization dawning in his eyes.

"My God," Arthur whispered. "She... she pushed her. There's no ambiguity here. This is attempted murder in the first degree."

"Correct," Daniel said coldly. "And that’s only the beginning. Noah, bring up the second file."

Noah Grant, standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a foggy Lake Michigan, tapped his phone. A second set of documents projected onto the large boardroom screen: digital copies of late Elizabeth Whitmore’s hidden medical files, toxicology reports indicating acute heavy-metal poisoning, and a certified copy of the handwritten codicil leaving a significant portion of her personal estate to Elena Ramirez.

Murmurs erupted among the legal team.

"Poisoning?" one of the junior lawyers gasped. "Are you saying your mother was murdered, Mr. Whitmore?"

"I’m saying my mother’s death wasn't natural, and Victoria Hale discovered that I was investigating it," Daniel said, standing up from his chair and walking slowly toward the window. "She realized that if Elena survived—and if that second will came to light—her entire life of fraud, privilege, and inheritance would be completely dismantled. That is why she tried to kill her."

Arthur Pendelton rubbed his temples, looking older than his fifty years. "If we release all of this to the media and the police simultaneously, it will create a media firestorm unlike anything Chicago has seen in a decade. The Whitmore name and the Hale name will dominate every headline across the globe."

"Let them dominate," Daniel said without turning around. "I didn't spend fifteen years building the most secure tech infrastructure in the world to be blackmailed by a corrupt political family. I want warrants issued for Victoria Hale’s arrest before noon. And I want federal investigators notified regarding the financial discrepancies in the Hale family trust."

"What about Senator Hale?" Noah asked from the window. "He's currently trying to pull every string he has at O'Hare to get that private jet cleared for Zurich."

A cold, humorless smile touched the corner of Daniel’s mouth.

"Tell aviation control that their flight plan violates federal airspace security protocols due to ongoing financial audits," Daniel instructed smoothly. "Ground the plane. And have two of our private security teams wait at the terminal to escort Victoria directly to the downtown precinct."

"Consider it handled," Noah said, pulling out his phone to issue the orders.

Just as Arthur and the legal team scrambled to gather their briefs and rush out to execute the billionaire’s commands, the boardroom doors flew open.

Standing in the doorway, out of breath and looking furious, was Senator Richard Hale.

He wasn't wearing his usual polished political suit; he looked disheveled, his silver hair slightly unkempt, his face flushed with righteous anger. Flanking him were two private bodyguards who took one look at Daniel Whitmore and wisely stayed put in the corridor.

"Daniel!" Senator Hale boomed, storming into the room with his chest puffed out. "What the hell kind of game are you playing? Freezing my family’s trust accounts? Grounding my daughter’s private aircraft? Have you completely lost your mind over some ungrateful kitchen maid?"

Daniel slowly turned around from the window. He didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply walked back to the head of the boardroom table, rested his knuckles on the polished wood, and looked the powerful politician dead in the eye.

"Welcome, Senator," Daniel said softly, the lethal calm in his voice chilling the room instantly. "We were just talking about you."
