Chapter 5 - The Senator’s Ultimatum

The tension in the boardroom was thick enough to cut with a diamond-tipped laser.
Senator Richard Hale stopped a few feet from the mahogany table, his chest heaving as he glared at Daniel. He was a man accustomed to bending boardrooms, police chiefs, and junior judges to his absolute will with a single phone call. But looking into Daniel Whitmore’s eyes, the veteran politician felt a sudden, uncharacteristic twitch of unease.
"Cut the corporate theatrics, Daniel," Senator Hale snapped, trying to project absolute authority. "You’ve made a catastrophic mistake this morning. Freezing my family’s assets and harassing my daughter at O'Hare Airport is an act of economic warfare. My legal team is already drafting an emergency injunction that will tie your assets up in federal court for the next five years."
Daniel didn't flinch. He slowly reached down, picked up his encrypted tablet, and pushed a single button.
The high-definition rooftop surveillance footage began to play on the massive wall-mounted screen directly behind the senator. The camera angle was crystal clear, capturing every detail of the gala, the string quartet playing in the background, and then—frame by frame—Victoria Hale stepping forward, pressing both hands against Elena Ramirez’s chest, and shoving her backward over the thirty-second-floor ledge.
The audio of the wind rushing past the microphone filled the silent room.
Senator Hale stopped talking mid-sentence. His eyes drifted slowly from Daniel’s face to the massive screen behind him. He watched his daughter, dressed in her two-hundred-thousand-dollar scarlet engagement gown, standing perfectly still as a human being plummeted into the darkness below.
For ten long seconds, the powerful politician looked as though he had been physically struck across the face. The color drained from his weathered cheeks, leaving him looking old, tired, and profoundly cornered.
"This... this is a fabrication," Senator Hale whispered hoarsely, though the conviction in his voice was entirely gone. "Deepfake technology... anyone can manipulate digital video nowadays... it won't hold up in a court with proper forensic analysis—"
"It's uncompressed, raw digital data streamed directly to an off-site cloud server with military-grade encryption," Daniel interrupted smoothly, his voice like sliding glaciers. "There are no edits. No alterations. And if the video isn't enough, Senator, we also have the audio logs of Victoria bragging to her friends last week about how she 'wished that pesky maid would just disappear from Whitmore Tower.'"
The senator gripped the back of a nearby chair, his knuckles turning white. "Daniel... let's be reasonable here. Young people make mistakes. Jealousy... passion... emotions run high during wedding preparations. Victoria was stressed. She wasn't thinking clearly—"
"She tried to murder an innocent woman," Daniel snapped, his calm exterior finally cracking just enough to reveal the boiling rage underneath. "She didn't just push her out of jealousy, Senator. She pushed her because she discovered that my mother’s death wasn't natural, and that my mother left a codicil in her will naming Elena as a beneficiary."
Senator Hale stiffened visibly. A flicker of genuine panic crossed his eyes—a micro-expression that didn't escape Daniel’s razor-sharp observation.
*He knew,* Daniel realized instantly. *The senator knew about the poisoning.*
"What... what nonsense are you talking about?" Senator Hale stammered, his voice pitching slightly upward. "Your mother died of cardiac arrest. It’s on the death certificate."
"My mother’s death certificate was signed off by a cardiologist who happened to receive a half-million-dollar anonymous donation to his private foundation three days later," Daniel said coldly, stepping around the table and walking directly toward the older man. "A donation routed through a shell corporation tied directly to your political campaign fund, Richard."
The room grew so quiet that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a roaring jet engine.
Senator Hale looked down at the floor, his shoulders slumping. The formidable political titan had vanished, replaced by a desperate, cornered man realizing his empire of cards was collapsing.
"If you release this..." Senator Hale whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and suppressed fury. "If you arrest Victoria and expose those financial records... you destroy my career. You destroy my family name. Everything I’ve built over thirty years in Washington will vanish overnight."
"You should have thought of that before your daughter tried to throw an innocent woman off a skyscraper," Daniel said, his voice entirely devoid of mercy.
Just then, the boardroom doors clicked open.
Noah Grant stepped inside, holding his phone up with a calm, triumphant expression.
"Boss," Noah said clearly. "Chicago PD just intercepted Victoria's vehicle on the expressway ramp leading to O'Hare. She’s in custody. They’re transporting her downtown for booking on charges of attempted first-degree murder."
Senator Hale staggered backward, catching himself against the mahogany table. He looked up at Daniel, tears welling in the corners of his aged eyes—not out of genuine remorse, but out of the bitter realization of total defeat.
"You're a ruthless bastard, Daniel," the senator hissed bitterly.
May you like
"No, Richard," Daniel replied, turning his back on him and walking back to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the glittering Chicago skyline. "I’m just a man who finally decided to protect the people who actually mattered."
