Chapter 7 - The St. Jude Memorial Reunion

The private VIP recovery suite at St. Jude Memorial Hospital smelled of antiseptic and fresh white roses—roses that Noah had secretly arranged to have delivered an hour earlier.

When Daniel pushed open the heavy wooden door, the room was quiet.

Elena sat propped up against a stack of hospital pillows, wearing a loose-fitting grey cotton gown. Her left arm was securely immobilized in a sling, and ugly purple bruises still stained her cheek and jawline, but her dark eyes were alert and clear.

She turned her head as the door clicked shut. When she saw Daniel standing there in his tailored suit, looking tired and wind-swept, her breath caught in her throat.

"Daniel... you shouldn't be here," Elena whispered, looking away awkwardly. "The reporters... they're swarming the lobby downstairs. If the press sees pictures of you visiting your maid in a hospital room after your high-profile engagement imploded, the tabloids will tear you apart."

Daniel didn't answer right away. He walked slowly across the linoleum floor, pulling a chair right beside her bedside, just as he had done thirty-six hours ago when she was fighting for her life.

He didn't sit down immediately. Instead, he reached out very gently, his warm fingers brushing against the back of her uninjured hand resting on the white sheets.

"Let them talk," Daniel said softly, his voice rich with an emotion he rarely allowed the world to see. "Let the tabloids print whatever they want. For the first time in three years, I finally feel like I can breathe."

Elena looked down at their joined hands, her lower lip trembling slightly. "I heard about... about Victoria. And Senator Hale."

"They're finished, Elena," Daniel said firmly. "Victoria is in custody without bail. The federal investigators are seizing every asset the Hale family owns. My mother’s death is finally going to be properly investigated by independent prosecutors who can't be bought off."

A single tear spilled over Elena’s lashes, tracing a path down her bruised cheek. "She... she tried to kill me, Daniel. Because she was afraid of losing everything. But all I ever wanted was... just to make sure you were okay."

Daniel leaned in closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath hitch.

"I know," Daniel whispered, his thumb gently wiping away the tear on her cheek. "You stayed with me in the hallway three years ago when my mother died, when I had nobody else. You looked after my home, my peace, my sanity, while I was too blind and arrogant to see what was happening right in front of me."

He paused, taking a deep, steadying breath.

"I never loved Victoria, Elena," Daniel confessed, the words finally tumbling out with absolute, undeniable truth. "I thought... I thought marriage was just the next logical step in my life. A corporate merger of social circles. I was a fool. I didn't know what real loyalty looked like until I saw you falling off that roof, and realized my entire world was about to vanish with you."

Elena looked up at him, her dark eyes shining with unshed tears. "Daniel... your world... it's too big, too dangerous for someone like me—"

May you like

"Stop," Daniel interrupted softly, placing two fingers gently against her lips. "Don't ever say you don't belong in my world. Because from now on, my world has only one rule: you stay right beside me."
