Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Penthouse

By late afternoon, the media storm had officially broken.

CNN, Fox News, and every major digital news outlet across the country were running breaking news banners: *TECH BILLIONAIRE DANIEL WHITMORE’S FIANCÉE ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER.* Helicopter camera footage of police cruisers surrounding Whitmore Tower and escorting Victoria Hale in handcuffs filled television screens from coast to coast.

Inside the sprawling penthouse on the top floor of the tower, however, there was only profound, heavy silence.

Daniel sat alone in his private study. The lights were off, save for the amber glow of a desk lamp casting long shadows across the walls. He stared down at a small, leather-bound journal that had belonged to his late mother—the very journal Elena had tried to protect three years ago when she first sat beside him on that cold hospital floor.

A soft knock echoed at the door.

"Come in," Daniel said quietly.

The door creaked open, and Noah stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder.

"The legal team has finished sorting through the preliminary forensic audits of the Hale family trust," Noah reported, his voice subdued. "It’s worse than we thought, Daniel. The financial records don’t just show payoffs to the cardiologist who signed your mother’s death certificate. They show a coordinated network of embezzlement, offshore shell companies, and illegal campaign financing dating back nearly a decade."

Daniel didn't look up from his mother’s journal. "What about Victoria?"

"She's currently being held at the Cook County Department of Corrections without bail," Noah replied. "Her defense attorneys tried to file an emergency habeas corpus petition, but Judge Harrison took one look at the uncompressed rooftop security footage and immediately recused himself. She’s got nowhere to run."

"Good," Daniel murmured, running his thumb over the edge of the worn leather journal.

"There's something else, boss," Noah added, hesitating slightly.

Daniel finally looked up. "What is it?"

"Elena just woke up from her afternoon sedative at St. Jude Memorial. The doctors say she's stable enough to receive visitors, but... she asked for her discharge papers."

Daniel’s expression shifted instantly. He stood up from his desk so fast his leather chair rolled back against the wall. "Discharge papers? Why? She has fractured ribs and a broken collarbone. She can't leave the hospital."

"She thinks she doesn't belong there anymore, Daniel," Noah said quietly, watching his boss carefully. "She told the nurse that now that the engagement is over and the police are involved, her job as senior household staff is officially terminated. She doesn't want to be a burden, and she certainly doesn't want to be the center of a media circus."

Without saying another word, Daniel grabbed his suit jacket off the back of the chair, strode past Noah without breaking stride, and headed straight for the private elevator.
