Chapter 2 - The Stained Glass and the Whispers

The murmurs grew louder, swelling like an incoming tide. Elara could feel the heat rising in her cheeks, but she forced her feet to move forward, one agonizing step at a time. The lace of her slippers clicked softly against the marble, entirely swallowed by the mocking whispers of the congregation.

"Where on earth did Julian find her?" a woman in the third row whispered loudly enough to carry across the vaulted ceiling. "She looks like she wandered out of a soup kitchen and raided a costume shop."

"Look at that crown," another snorted, adjusting a diamond necklace that cost more than a small estate. "Does she actually think anyone here believes those are real gems? Plastic and glass, wrapped in copper wire. It’s pathetic."

At the altar, Julian stood waiting. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal tuxedo, looking every bit the dashing heir of the Sterling shipping fortune. Yet, as Elara's eyes met his, she saw no warmth, no reassurance—only a tight, strained expression. He looked away, his jaw clenching as if he were embarrassed to be seen standing with her.

Lady Agatha stopped her rhythmic tapping. She leaned heavily on her silver cane, her sharp, hawk-like eyes narrowing as Elara drew closer. The old matriarch’s lips formed a thin, bloodless line of absolute disdain.

"Hurry up, girl," Lady Agatha’s voice echoed sharply through the cavernous nave, carrying an authority that brooked no argument. "We do not have all day to wait for your amateur hour entrance. Some of us have actual business to attend to after this tiresome ceremony."

Elara’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. She wanted to turn around, to run back out into the rain and escape the crushing weight of their contempt. But she had made a promise, and more importantly, she carried a truth inside her heart that none of these glittering vultures could possibly imagine.

She reached the base of the altar, stopping just a few feet away from Julian and Lady Agatha. The air smelled of expensive perfume, old incense, and palpable, suffocating malice.

"You're late," Julian muttered under his breath, not even bothering to look down at her. "And you look... couldn't you have borrowed something decent from a friend?"

May you like

"I wore what I had, Julian," Elara whispered back, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.

Lady Agatha let out a dry, scornful laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across a tombstone. "What she had? Clearly, nothing of any value. Let us get this over with quickly. I want this farce finished before the press gets any more ammunition to mock our family name."
