Chapter 3 - The Rising Storm

The priest standing before the altar nervously cleared his throat, opening the heavy leather-bound Bible. He looked down at Elara with a mixture of pity and discomfort, clearly wishing he were anywhere else in the world.

"Dearly beloved," the priest began, his voice echoing hollowly against the stone walls, "we are gathered here today in the sight of God and these witnesses to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony..."

As the familiar words washed over the congregation, the whispers died down, replaced by a tense, suffocating quiet. But the tension was not born of sacred reverence; it was the cruel, anticipatory silence of an audience waiting for the tragedy in the third act.

Lady Agatha tapped her cane once against the floor, a sharp reminder to everyone that she was running the show. She turned her gaze toward Julian, offering a tight, approving nod—a silent communication between two people who believed they held all the cards.

Elara stood quietly, her hands resting over the small, worn prayer book she held against her waist. Inside the pages of that book lay a photograph and a folded document—items she had kept hidden through months of hunger, cold, and loneliness.

Julian shifted uncomfortably, glancing back toward the heavy oak doors of the cathedral. A flicker of anxiety crossed his features. He wasn't just worried about Elara’s appearance; he was watching the clock, waiting for something—or someone—else to arrive.

"If any man can show just cause why they may not lawfully be joined together," the priest continued, pausing per custom, "let him speak now, or else forever hold his peace."

A heavy silence settled over the cathedral. For a fleeting second, Elara wondered if anyone would speak. She wondered if the universe would show her a shred of mercy before she tied her life to a man who looked at her with thinly veiled disgust.

Before the priest could move to the next portion of the liturgy, the massive oak doors at the back of the cathedral creaked open.

A sharp gust of wind swept down the grand aisle, fluttering the candles along the pews. Footsteps echoed from the entrance—heavy, measured, and accompanied by the unmistakable sound of a military stride.

Julian’s face drained of all color. His eyes went wide with sheer terror.
