Chapter 6 - The Unmasking of Julian

The blinding flash of the true diamond tiara seemed to suck all the air out of the cathedral. For several seconds, nobody moved. The glittering heirloom sat in Elara’s palm like a silent accusation, radiating a timeless authority that humiliated every cheap, synthetic jewel worn by the society women in the pews.
Lady Agatha staggered backward, catching herself against the edge of the marble altar with a sharp gasp. The color had entirely drained from her face, leaving her looking like a withered ghost wrapped in green velvet.
"That... that's impossible," Lady Agatha hissed, her voice trembling with sheer terror. "The vault was sealed! The heirloom was lost in the fire decades ago!"
"Nothing was lost, Lady Agatha," Commander Vance said coldly, stepping closer to the altar. "It was hidden. Hidden by your husband to protect his illegitimate son’s claim—the very son you raised to inherit an empire he had no legal right to touch."
Vance turned his sharp gaze toward Julian, who was now trembling so violently his knees appeared ready to buckle. The dashing, arrogant heir was entirely gone, replaced by a cornered rat trapped in a spotlight.
"Julian knew," Vance continued, his voice ringing out across the silent church. "He knew who Elara was from the moment she arrived in the city. He sought her out under a false name, pretended to love her, and convinced her to sign away her ancestral rights through a fraudulent prenuptial agreement hidden inside wedding documents—all so he could steal the final signature required to unlock the trust legally."
Gasps of outrage rippled through the congregation. The wealthy elites who had mocked Elara’s frayed dress just ten minutes prior now looked at Julian with disgust and horror. Social alliances crumbled in real-time as influential families realized they had aligned themselves with a fraud.
Elara stepped forward, her frayed dress no longer looking like a symbol of poverty, but rather like the armor of a warrior who had walked through fire to claim her birthright.
"You thought I was weak, Julian," Elara said, her voice clear, calm, and utterly devastating. "You thought that because I grew up in the shadows, I wouldn't know how to read the fine print. You thought a fake tiara was the only crown I deserved."
Julian dropped to his knees, his hands clutching desperately at the hem of her frayed lace gown. "Elara—please! Listen to me! It was a misunderstanding! I loved you! We can still fix this, we can—"

Elara looked down at him, her eyes completely devoid of pity. She gently pulled her dress away from his trembling fingers.
"You don't love anyone, Julian," she whispered. "You only love the power that wasn't yours to begin with."
