Chapter 4 - The Uninvited Guest

Every head in the congregation turned toward the back of the cathedral. The hushed whispers instantly returned, but this time, they were laced with sudden confusion and alarm.

Walking down the grand aisle was not a guest of high society, nor was it a late parishioner. It was Commander Marcus Vance, chief legal executor of the Sterling family estate and a decorated veteran of the high courts. Behind him marched two men in immaculate dark suits, carrying a heavy, reinforced steel briefcase between them.

Lady Agatha froze. The silver-headed cane slipped slightly against the marble, breaking its rhythmic tapping for the first time all afternoon. Her aristocratic composure fractured, revealing a deep, sudden panic beneath her powdered skin.

"What is the meaning of this interruption?" Lady Agatha demanded, her voice cracking slightly as she stepped forward. "This is a private family ceremony! Guards, remove these men immediately!"

Commander Vance did not even spare Lady Agatha a glance. He walked past the gaping rows of wealthy elites, his boots striking the marble with the force of an oncoming storm. He stopped thirty feet short of the altar, pulling a pair of white-gloved hands from his coat pockets.

"There is just cause," Commander Vance announced, his deep, resonant voice filling every corner of the cathedral. "And it has everything to do with the foundation upon which this family claims its wealth."

Julian stumbled backward, tripping slightly over the edge of the altar platform. "Vance! You have no business here! This is a private matter!"

"It ceased to be a private matter the moment you attempted to execute a fraudulent marriage under false pretenses, Julian Sterling," Vance replied coldly. He turned his eyes toward the front, locking onto the trembling figure of Elara.

To the absolute shock of the entire congregation, the formidable Commander Vance bowed his head respectfully toward the poor bride in the frayed dress.

"Your Ladyship," Vance said loudly, addressing Elara with a title that sent a collective shockwave through the church. "The estate is secure. The rightful heir has arrived."

The silence that followed was absolute. People stared from Vance to Julian, and finally back to Elara, whose posture suddenly shifted. The trembling vanished, replaced by a calm, quiet dignity that radiated like steel.
