Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence

The cold marble floor of the conservatory pressed hard against Skylar’s back, a chilling contrast to the burning heat radiating from her swollen cheek. Through the heavy ringing in her ears, the sounds of the mansion seemed muffled, filtered through layers of cotton. But she could still hear Carmela’s ragged breaths beside her and the sharp, nervous clicking of Bianca Moretti’s designer heels against the stone.

Dominic Rossi remained kneeling beside Skylar, his large, capable hand holding the white silk handkerchief against her torn skin. There was no hesitation in his movement, no squeamishness at the sight of blood. His dark eyes, usually guarded behind a wall of impenetrable corporate coldness, scanned her face with a terrifying intensity.

"Dominic," Bianca said, her voice dropping into the honeyed, breathless octave she reserved exclusively for him. She stepped forward, her white gown sweeping past the spilled red wine like a trail of fresh snow over a battlefield. "You cannot possibly believe her. Your mother’s mind is going. Everyone on the staff knows it. She imagined the whole thing. And this... this clumsy girl simply lunged at me because she was carrying that heavy tray."

Dominic didn’t look up. He kept the pressure steady against Skylar’s cheek.

"Is that what happened, Skylar?" his voice was low, smooth as aged whiskey, carrying effortlessly across the vast expanse of the glass-domed room.

Skylar swallowed the metallic taste of blood in her mouth. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew the power dynamics of the Rossi estate. Bianca Moretti wasn't just a bride; she was the daughter of Salvatore Moretti, a shipping tycoon whose alliance with the Rossi syndicate spanned three decades. Bianca held social status, political backing, and a ring worth more than a small island. Skylar was just "Penny," the oversized, clumsy maid who broke china and struggled to keep pace with the grueling demands of the mansion.

One word from Skylar could spark a war between two of the most dangerous families on the Eastern Seaboard. Or it could get her fired, stripping away the income that kept her father alive in his hospital bed.

"No, Mr. Rossi," Skylar whispered, her voice cracking. "That’s not... that’s not what happened."

Bianca’s breath hitched. "You lying little—"

"Quiet, Bianca," Dominic said.

It wasn't a shout. It was barely above a murmur. Yet the command carried such absolute, bone-chilling authority that Bianca snapped her mouth shut, her face draining of color.

Dominic finally turned his head to look at Bianca. The sheer emptiness in his gaze was far more frightening than any burst of rage. "You interrupted my mother. You raised your hand in my house. And you struck an employee who was protecting a guest."

"She isn't a guest, she's a liability!" Bianca shrieked, the mask of elegance finally slipping, revealing the frantic, entitled panic underneath. "We are getting married in twenty-four days! My father is coming to dinner tomorrow! Do you think I’m going to let some senile old woman and her clumsy servant humiliate me in my own home?"

Carmela let out a small, wounded sound and slumped backward. Skylar instinctively reached out, catching the older woman’s frail arm before she could hit the floor.

"Mr. Rossi," Skylar panted, wincing as the movement pulled at her split lip. "Please. Just... just help Mrs. Rossi sit down. I'm okay."

Dominic looked down at Skylar’s hand—large, rough from harsh cleaning chemicals, stained with the honest labor of sixty-hour work weeks—resting gently on his mother’s wrist. For a fraction of a second, a muscle ticked along his jawline.

"Marco," Dominic called out without raising his voice.

From the shadows of the arched doorway, a towering man in a charcoal suit materialized. Marco, Dominic’s head of security and shadow of fifteen years, stepped into the light.

"Boss," Marco said, his face like carved granite.

"Escort Miss Moretti to the East Wing guest quarters," Dominic instructed, his eyes returning to Skylar’s bleeding face. "Ensure her luggage is packed and placed in her vehicle. Call her father. Inform him that the wedding is postponed indefinitely."

Bianca staggered backward as if she had been physically struck. "Postponed? Dominic, you can't be serious! You can't do this over a maid! Over a fat, clumsy nobody!"

"Marco," Dominic repeated, his voice dropping another octave.

Marco moved with terrifying speed, his large hand gripping Bianca’s bare elbow with enough pressure to halt her tirade. "This way, Miss Moretti."

"You'll regret this!" Bianca screamed, her voice echoing off the glass panes of the conservatory as Marco escorted her away, her white dress rustling frantically against the floor. "My father will destroy you! Both of you!"

The heavy oak doors swung shut, cutting off her shouts. Silence settled back over the room, thick and heavy.

Dominic slowly stood up. He towered over Skylar, casting a long shadow across the marble. He reached down, slipped his strong hands beneath her arms and her knees, and lifted her effortlessly off the floor.

Skylar gasped, clutching at his lapels purely out of reflex. "Mr. Rossi! I can walk—I'm too heavy, put me down—"

"Shut up, Skylar," he said quietly, carrying her toward the private elevator hidden behind the conservatory’s marble pillars.

Carmela scrambled up, following closely behind them, wringing her hands. "Is she going to be alright, Dominic? Is my girl alright?"

"She'll be fine, Mother," Dominic said, stepping into the elevator and pressing the button for the private medical suite on the third floor. "And she is staying right here until I say otherwise."

As the doors slid shut, sealing them inside the private sanctum of the Rossi empire, Skylar looked up at the man holding her. She didn't know it yet, but the slap in the conservatory hadn't just broken her skin—it had shattered the fragile peace of the Rossi underworld, and the shockwaves were about to wake a sleeping giant.
