Chapter 4 - A New Hierarchy

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the atmosphere inside the Rossi mansion had shifted from quiet tension to absolute, martial law-level precision.
Skylar woke up in the guest suite adjoining Carmela’s private quarters. Her cheek throbbed, but the swelling had gone down thanks to the ice packs Dr. Vance had left. When she opened the wardrobe, she didn't find her standard grey maid’s uniform. Instead, hanging neatly in the cedar-scented closet were three custom-tailored navy blue business-casual pantsuits, soft silk blouses, and a pair of comfortable flats.
On the vanity lay a sealed envelope bearing the Rossi family crest stamped in heavy black wax.
Skylar broke the seal and unfolded the heavy cardstock:
*Skylar,*
*Your new duties begin at 0900. Accompany my mother to the solarium. Do not answer questions from the senior domestic staff regarding your promotion; they have already been briefed. A security detail has been assigned to you both.*
*— D.*
Skylar dressed quickly, running a brush through her hair and applying a light dab of concealer over the fading bruise on her cheekbone. When she stepped out into the hallway, she found two men in tailored black suits standing discreetly by the double doors. They nodded respectfully as she passed—a stark contrast to the sneers and whispered gossip she had endured for the past eleven months.
When she entered the solarium, Carmela was sitting by the floor-to-ceiling windows, feeding crumbs to a pair of finches in a brass cage.
"Skylar!" Carmela beamed, her face lighting up with genuine warmth. "Look, darling! The little ones are hungry today."
"Good morning, Mrs. Rossi," Skylar smiled, walking over to hand her a fresh cup of tea. "How did you sleep?"
"Like a queen," Carmela said happily, taking a sip. Then her expression clouded slightly, her brow furrowing. "Dominic came to see me last night. He told me... he told me Bianca is gone."
Skylar’s movements paused. "Yes, Mrs. Rossi. She left."
"Good," Carmela muttered, a fierce spark returning to her aged eyes. "A viper in the house. I always knew it. My son deserves better. He’s carried the weight of this family on his shoulders for ten years since his father passed, and people think they can walk all over him just because he’s quiet."
Skylar stood beside her, looking out over the sprawling green lawns of the estate. The rain had cleared, leaving the morning air crisp and bright. For the first time since she had taken the job out of desperation, she didn't feel like an outsider looking in.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the solarium swung open.
Head Housekeeper Mrs. Higgins marched in, her face flushed with indignation, followed by three senior kitchen staff members carrying trays.
"Skylar," Mrs. Higgins snapped, stopping short when she noticed the new suit and the security guards standing at attention outside the door. She blinked, her haughty expression faltering for a second before hardening again. "What is the meaning of this? The kitchen received a directive from Mr. Rossi’s office stating you are no longer to report to me. They said you've been... reassigned?"
Skylar stood her ground, drawing herself up to her full height. The old Skylar would have shrunk away, stammering apologies. But looking at the two security guards standing silently behind Mrs. Higgins, she realized the rules of the house had changed.
"That's correct, Mrs. Higgins," Skylar said, her voice steady and clear. "I report directly to Mr. Rossi and Mrs. Rossi now."
Mrs. Higgins let out a sharp, derisive laugh. "Directly to the Boss? Don't be absurd. You’re the clumsy girl who dropped the crystal bowl! You think because you caused a scene last night and got Miss Moretti to throw a tantrum that you're suddenly running the estate?"
Before Skylar could reply, a cold, carrying voice echoed from the doorway.
"Is there a problem here, Mrs. Higgins?"
Dominic stepped into the solarium. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees instantly.
Mrs. Higgins spun around, her authoritative demeanor instantly melting into nervous sweat. "Mr. Rossi! No, sir, of course not. It's just... there’s been some confusion with the staff rosters. We didn't understand why an unqualified maid was being elevated to—"
"Unqualified?" Dominic interrupted, walking slowly toward them until he stood directly beside Skylar. He placed a hand casually on the back of her chair, a protective, proprietary gesture that made Mrs. Higgins recoil. "Skylar protected my mother from physical assault when every single senior member of this household fled in terror. She has more loyalty in her little finger than you have in your entire payroll."
Mrs. Higgins turned pale. "Sir, I didn't mean—"
"You are dismissed, Mrs. Higgins," Dominic said softly. "Collect your severance from HR and leave the property by noon."
"Mr. Rossi, please! Twenty years of service—!"
"Twelve o'clock," Dominic repeated, his eyes like shards of black ice.
Mrs. Higgins trembled, turned on her heel, and practically sprinted out of the solarium, the kitchen staff scurrying behind her like mice fleeing a collapsing barn.
Carmela chuckled softly into her teacup. "Well handled, son."

Dominic looked down at Skylar, a ghost of a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. "Welcome to your new job, Skylar."
