Chapter 8 - Whispers of the Empire

Three weeks had passed since the night of the attack, and the Rossi estate had undergone a profound transformation.

The gossip and whispered mockery from the senior staff were entirely gone, replaced by absolute, reverent respect. Those who had mocked Skylar during her early months as "Penny" had quietly resigned or been reassigned to distant properties in upstate New York. In their place stood a handpicked, loyal domestic team that treated Skylar not as a clumsy maid, but as the executive director of the household and the most trusted confidante of the Rossi matriarch.

On a crisp Tuesday afternoon, Skylar sat in the sunlit solarium, reviewing the quarterly estate budgets on a sleek tablet. Her hair was tied back in a neat bun, and the scar on her cheek had faded into a faint, silvery line—a badge of honor she no longer tried to hide.

Carmela sat across from her, painting watercolors of the rose garden with a steady, focused hand.

"Dominic is late," Carmela muttered, not looking up from her canvas. "He always comes home for lunch when we have lemon tarts."

"He’s finalizing the acquisition of the Moretti shipping terminals in Manhattan, Mrs. Rossi," Skylar said with a warm smile, tapping the screen of her tablet. "Meetings with federal regulators always run long."

"Hmph," Carmela snorted lightly. "He works too much. That boy needs a wife. Or at least a distraction that isn't a ledger or a criminal syndicate."

Skylar felt a sudden flush of heat rise to her cheeks. Over the past three weeks, her relationship with Dominic had evolved in ways she never could have anticipated. There had been no grand declarations of love—men like Dominic Rossi didn't operate in romantic clichés—but there were quiet dinners in his private study, lingering glances across the breakfast table, and late-night conversations where the cold, untouchable mafia boss revealed the exhausted, human heart beating beneath his armor.

Just then, the heavy double doors of the solarium opened, and Dominic walked in.

He had discarded his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the corded muscle of his forearms. He looked tired, the shadows beneath his dark eyes betraying the immense stress of restructuring an entire criminal and corporate empire, but the moment he saw Skylar sitting across from his mother, his expression softened instantly.

"You're late, son," Carmela scolded playfully, pointing a paintbrush at him. "Skylar made lemon tarts."

"My apologies, Mother. Traffic on the bridge was backed up," Dominic said, walking over and placing a light kiss on Carmela’s forehead. Then, his gaze shifted to Skylar.

He pulled out the chair beside her, sitting down so close their shoulders brushed. The familiar, intoxicating scent of sandalwood and expensive cologne washed over her.

"How was the meeting?" Skylar asked quietly, sliding a plate of fresh lemon tarts toward him.

"Done," Dominic said, picking up a tart and taking a bite. His dark eyes never left her face. "The terminals are ours. The Moretti assets are fully absorbed. And the federal investigators have closed their file on our operations."

"Then you can finally take a day off," Skylar said firmly.

Dominic let out a low, gravelly chuckle. "Maybe. If my executive assistant approves the schedule."

Carmela beamed, dabbing her paintbrush in a cup of water. "She'll approve it. Won't you, sweetheart?"

Skylar smiled, feeling a profound sense of peace settle over her chest. For the first time in her life, she wasn't hiding, she wasn't apologizing for taking up space, and she wasn't terrified of the next blow.
