The fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway hummed overhead, casting a clinical, sterile glow over the polished floors

"Dr. Lin, thank God I found you," the man in the beige sweater gasped, clutching a black leather tablet case to his chest. His name badge identified him as Dr. Sean Miller, the chief resident of neurosurgery. "The trauma bay on sub-level two just received a priority-one incoming from the interstate pileup. It’s Chairman Hayes. His arterial line collapsed in transit, and the board of directors is already calling the chief of surgery’s private line. They're demanding the top vascular specialist in the state."

Serena Lin did not glance back over her shoulder toward Julian Vaughn, who was still standing twenty feet away, his fists clenched inside his sweater pockets, vibrating with humiliated fury. Her pulse remained completely steady, settling into the clinical rhythm she had cultivated through six years of top-tier surgical fellowships in Boston and Zurich.

"Page perfusion and prep OR Four," Serena said, her voice dropping into an authoritative, calm cadence as she walked alongside Sean without breaking stride. "Set up cell-saver, cross-match six units of O-negative, and get me a high-resolution CT angiogram of the thoracic aorta. If the intimal tear extends past the subclavian artery, we are performing an emergent endovascular repair before the board finishes parking their cars."

Behind them, Julian’s heavy dress shoes squeaked against the freshly waxed vinyl tiles as he lunged forward, grabbing Serena’s upper arm with enough force to pull her back half a step.

"Serena, do not walk away from me when I am speaking to you!" Julian snarled, his face inches from hers. "My mother has been bedridden for three days because you refused to attend her birthday gala! You think because you put on a pair of scrubs you can ignore your duties as my wife? I bankroll this entire hospital wing! I will have the hospital director strip your medical license before the end of the day!"

Sean froze, his eyes wide in alarm, glancing nervously between the billionaire heir and the calm woman beside him.

Serena did not pull her arm away in panic. Instead, she rotated her wrist with a sharp, anatomical leverage, applying three fingers of pressure to the radial nerve groove in Julian's forearm.

Julian let out a sharp, involuntary gasp of pain, his fingers going numb as his grip was forced open. He stumbled back a pace, clutching his wrist, staring at her in shock.

"Mr. Vaughn," Serena said, her eyes chilling to sub-zero steel. "First, our divorce decree was signed and filed with the Superior Court forty-eight hours ago. Second, the hospital foundation funding you boast about was endowed by my late grandfather’s trust, not your real estate firm. Third, you are physically obstructing a surgeon responding to a life-threatening trauma code. Under state penal code section 242, that constitutes a class-four felony."

She pulled the digital pager from her pocket, clicking the emergency security alert once.

Two armed hospital security officers stepped around the corner of the corridor, their hands on their duty belts.

"Escort Mr. Vaughn out of the surgical wing," Serena directed smoothly, not sparing Julian another second of her attention. "If he steps past the security threshold again today, file a formal criminal trespass report with the precinct."

"Serena!" Julian roared as the two guards stepped between them, firmly guiding him backward toward the public elevators. "You're nothing without the Vaughn name! You hear me? Nothing!"

Serena turned to Sean, whose jaw hung slightly slack.

"Let's move, Sean," she said calmly, tying the strings of her surgical mask over her nose. "We have a patient to save."
