Chapter 9 - The Harbor of New Beginnings

One year after the morning Julian Vaughn had confronted her in the hospital corridor, the terrace of the Lin Institute was decorated with strings of golden fairy lights and lush arrangements of white hydrangeas and wild coastal lavender.

Over three hundred physicians, nurses, researchers, and close personal friends gathered under the warm evening sky for the annual celebration of the institute's first pediatric surgical class.

Sean Miller stood on the raised platform with a microphone in hand, his face beaming with pride.

"A year ago, our chief gave an arrogant man directional advice in a hospital hallway," Sean addressed the laughing crowd. "She told him to see a neurologist and turn left at the exit. And while that man took the exit straight to federal prison, Dr. Serena Lin took our entire field straight into a new era of medical history."

The terrace erupted into cheerful cheers, clinking champagne flutes, and warm applause.

Serena stood near the stone fountain, wearing an understated emerald silk dress that caught the twilight breeze, laughing as Sean raised his glass in a mock-formal salute.

Marcus Hayes walked up beside her, handing her a glass of sparkling water, his arm brushing gently against hers.

"How does it feel, Chief Lin?" Marcus whispered softly, looking at her with boundless affection and deep, enduring devotion.

Serena looked out over the gathering—at the healthy children running across the lawn, at the dedicated surgical teams laughing together, and at the vast, peaceful harbor stretching toward the open horizon.

"It feels like breathing for the very first time, Marcus," Serena answered softly, resting her hand against his forearm.

"Then let's make sure you never have to hold your breath again," Marcus smiled.
