Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Archives

By ten o'clock that evening, the surgical floor had settled into a quiet, rhythmic hum.

Serena sat in her newly assigned corner office on the eighth floor of the hospital tower, reviewing post-operative angiograms while sipping a cup of unsweetened green tea. The room was spacious, wrapped in panoramic glass windows overlooking the glittering skyline of the harbor below.

A soft double-knock sounded at the door.

Sean Miller entered, carrying a thick manila envelope sealed with red evidentiary wax.

"Dr. Lin," Sean said, setting the folder on her desk with nervous care. "The records department just released the sealed archival files from the 2018 clinical trials at St. Jude Memorial. The ones your grandfather authorized before his fatal stroke."

Serena set her teacup down, her pulse quickening slightly. "Did they verify the signature on the trial termination orders?"

"Yes," Sean replied, pulling out a high-resolution forensic document. "The signature that canceled your grandfather’s vascular research endowment wasn't his. It was forged by Dr. Arthur Vance—our chief of anesthesiology—under the direct instruction of Julian Vaughn's father, Edward Vaughn."

Serena’s eyes darkened into cold flint.

Her grandfather, Dr. Thomas Lin, had been a pioneer in pediatric cardiovascular surgery. When he died suddenly six years ago, the Vaughn family had swooped in, offering to 'protect' the grieving granddaughter, managing her legal affairs, and subtly nudging her into a marriage of convenience with Julian while systematically burying her grandfather’s medical patents.

"They didn't just steal the money, Sean," Serena whispered, her fingers tracing the forged signature. "They suppressed the bio-synthetic stent technology for six years so the Vaughn pharmaceutical subsidiary could continue selling their outdated, high-risk metal valves at a four-hundred-percent markup."

"And Arthur Vance was the inside man," Sean added. "He received a three-percent royalty on every valve sold in this state."

The office door clicked open.

Marcus Hayes stepped inside, having discarded his suit jacket, his sleeves rolled once over his forearms, carrying two leather-bound legal folios.

"We have the offshore banking records from Zurich, Dr. Lin," Marcus said, walking straight to the conference table. "Edward Vaughn transferred six million dollars into Vance’s Swiss account forty-eight hours after your grandfather’s funeral."

Serena looked up at Marcus. "Can we prove Vance knowingly falsified the patient mortality records during the 2018 trials?"

"We don't have to prove it alone," Marcus replied, a dangerous, confident glint in his gray eyes. "We have the original laboratory hard drives. The ones your grandfather hid in the private vault at the Boston Maritime Trust."

Serena stood up, buttoning her white physician's coat over her scrubs. "Then let’s pay Dr. Vance a visit in the staff lounge before his shift ends."
