Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Eviction

Victoria Vaughn gasped, her emerald cane slipping from her manicured fingers and clattering loudly against the terrazzo floor. "Chief of Surgery? Executive Director? Marcus, you cannot be serious! She is a junior attending who was discarded by my son!"

Marcus turned his head slowly, his cold gray eyes locking onto Victoria with lethal precision.

"Mrs. Vaughn," Marcus said, his voice flat as an iron slab. "Dr. Lin is the lead researcher who developed the bio-synthetic vascular stent that saved fourteen thousand lives in Europe last year. My father specifically requested her transfer from Zurich six months ago. The only reason she remained in this city was to finalize the legal severance of her assets from your family's fraudulent holding company."

Julian’s throat went bone dry. "What fraudulent holding company?"

Serena stepped forward, pulling a pair of sterile scrubs covers off her shoes and tossing them into the bin. Her posture was straight, her expression entirely serene.

"Three years ago, Julian," Serena said, "your father convinced my grandfather’s estate to invest eighty million dollars into the Vaughn Maritime Logistics expansion. You claimed the capital was being used to build green-energy container ports in Boston."

She pulled a tablet from Sean's hands, tapping the screen once to cast a financial dossier onto the waiting room's wall-mounted presentation monitors.

"Instead," Serena continued, "the forensic audit completed this morning by the State Securities Division reveals that you diverted forty-five million dollars to cover your gambling losses at the Wynn in Macau, while using my private trust dividends to pay the mortgage on your mother’s Newport estate."

Victoria’s face turned an ashen shade of gray. "That... that is private family accounting! It was a bridge loan!"

"It was grand larceny and securities fraud, Mrs. Vaughn," Marcus Hayes stated coldly. "And as of nine o'clock this morning, the Hayes Energy Conglomerate acquired all outstanding debt notes held by your family's creditors. The Vaughn Group is officially in technical default."

Julian lunged toward Serena, his face twisted in desperate rage. "Serena, you can't do this to my family! We gave you everything! I took you to galas! I made you respectable!"

Serena looked at him with the quiet, profound pity one might show to a stray insect.

"You didn't make me respectable, Julian," Serena replied softly. "You used my grandfather’s name to keep your sinking ship afloat. But the water is coming in now. And I am no longer on board."

Two federal marshals in dark suits stepped out of the private elevator bay, flashing gold badges as they approached the Vaughn family.

"Julian Vaughn, Victoria Vaughn," the lead marshal announced. "You are required to surrender your passports and appear before the United States District Court at nine o'clock tomorrow morning for emergency asset seizure hearings."

As the marshals escorted the paralyzed, weeping matriarch and her humiliated son toward the elevators, Serena turned to Marcus Hayes.

"How is your father's postoperative telemetry, Mr. Hayes?" she asked, entirely unruffled.

Marcus looked at her, a rare, genuine smile softening the sharp lines of his face. "He is resting comfortably, Dr. Lin. Now, if you have thirty minutes, I would like to show you the blueprints for your new research hospital."
