Chapter 6 - The Confrontation in the Solarium

By 2:00 AM, the storm had pushed out over Long Island Sound, leaving behind a thick, clinging fog that rolled across the sweeping lawns of the Callaway estate.

Inside the glass-walled solarium on the second floor, forty-two-year-old Richard Sinclair and his daughter Vanessa sat at an antique marble table.

Vanessa wore an elegant emerald silk evening gown, her blonde hair styled in an immaculate chignon, holding a crystal glass of sparkling mineral water. Her father, dressed in a bespoke tuxedo from an interrupted dinner party in Manhattan, tapped his gold signet ring impatiently against the table.

"Where is Nathaniel?" Richard demanded as Lucas Kane stood guard by the closed double doors. "He summoned us to Greenwich at midnight under claims of an emergency board meeting, and we have been sitting in this room for an hour like common suspects!"

"Nathaniel is a developer with a flare for dramatic control, Father," Vanessa sighed, checking her diamond wristwatch. "He probably discovered the discrepancy in the Brooklyn freight contracts. It doesn't matter. Once the merger is signed on Monday, the family voting shares are legally indivisible."

The heavy double doors of the solarium swung inward.

Nathaniel Callaway walked into the room.

He had changed into a fresh white linen shirt and dark trousers, but his overcoat was gone, his posture radiating the absolute, terrifying majesty of an apex sovereign entering a courtroom.

Walking on his arm was I.

I wore an oversized cream cashmere sweater and dark wool trousers that Mrs. Whitfield had brought from the master guest wardrobe. My hands were neatly bandaged, my dark hair combed soft around my shoulders, my chin lifted with unbending, quiet dignity.

Behind us walked Frank Callahan, Nathaniel’s chief corporate litigator, accompanied by Special Agent Raymond Callahan of the FBI’s Public Corruption Task Force.

Vanessa froze.

The crystal glass in her hand slipped, shattering against the marble tabletop in a violent spray of sparkling water and sharp glass shards.

Every drop of color drained from Vanessa’s face, leaving her skin the shade of wet limestone. Her eyes darted from my face to the white bandages on my wrists, her mouth opening and closing in soundless, paralyzed horror.

"Clara...?" Vanessa whispered, her voice climbing into a shrill, breathless register.

Richard Sinclair jumped to his feet, knocking his chair backward onto the flagstones. "Nathaniel! What is the meaning of this? Why have you brought a common domestic servant into a private family assembly?"

"She is not a domestic servant, Richard," Nathaniel said, each word falling like an iron block upon stone. "She is the woman who preserved my empire from a family of thieves."
