Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Sinclair Dynasty

Frank Callahan stepped forward, slamming three thick, red-embossed portfolios onto the center of the marble table with a concussive thud that made Richard Sinclair flinch.
"Under emergency judicial warrants executed by Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery at midnight," Frank announced, his voice booming through the glass solarium, "Richard Sinclair and Vanessa Sinclair are under active federal indictment for Kidnapping, Premeditated Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Corporate Embezzlement exceeding eighty million dollars, and Federal Racketeering under the RICO Act."
Frank connected his tablet to the seventy-inch wall display.
The screen illuminated in crystalline four-K clarity:
First came the decrypted bank wire confirmations from Zurich showing Richard’s personal accounts absorbing forty million in stolen Callaway logistics credits; next came the intercepted burst transmission from the farmhouse cellar where Victor Cole confirmed the hit-and-run plan to Vanessa’s private phone; and finally, Victor Cole's sworn, unedited video confession recorded thirty minutes earlier in the county holding cell.
The solarium erupted into frantic, suffocating panic.
Richard Sinclair collapsed onto his knees on the flagstones, clutching his chest, hyperventilating as his patrician facade dissolved into dust. "Nathaniel... please! My firm was in debt to private creditors in London! They were going to liquidate our family holdings! I was going to repay the logistics credits once the October merger closed!"
"You were going to murder the mother of a three-year-old child to hide your bankruptcy, Richard," Nathaniel said softly, his slate-gray eyes void of all human mercy.
Vanessa lunged forward, throwing her hands onto the table, tears of pure, desperate terror cutting clean lines through her designer makeup. "Nathaniel! Listen to me! I loved you! I did what was necessary to protect our future! The maid was nothing! A nobody from Queens! Who would have cared if she disappeared?"
Nathaniel walked slowly around the table.
He stopped six inches from Vanessa, looking down at the woman he had intended to marry with the vast, quiet indifference of an ancient mountain looking at dust.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out the five-carat diamond engagement ring she had returned for resizing the day before, and let it drop onto the table between them with a cold, hollow clink.
"I care, Vanessa," Nathaniel whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal stillness. "My household cares. And the United States District Court cares."
Special Agent Raymond Callahan stepped forward, unsealing two sets of heavy steel transport restraints.

"Richard Sinclair, Vanessa Sinclair," Agent Callahan announced. "You are under arrest."
As the federal marshals clicked the steel cuffs around their wrists and dragged the screaming, sobbing traitors from the solarium, Nathaniel turned his back on the room, walking out into the quiet hall.
