Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Cole Dynasty

Frank Callahan stepped forward, slamming three thick certified probate decrees onto the center table with a concussive thud that rattled the china.
"Under emergency seizure warrants executed by Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery at 8:00 PM today, Arthur," Frank announced, his voice cutting through the room like a broadsword, "Arthur Cole and Marcus Bellman are under active federal indictment for First-Degree Depraved Heart Murder, Grand Probate Larceny exceeding fourteen million dollars, Wire Fraud, and Federal Racketeering under the RICO Act."
Frank connected his tablet to the ballroom's seventy-foot digital display wall.
The massive screens illuminated instantly in four-K clarity:
First came the uncorrupted 2015 metallurgical reports proving that Arthur Cole had deliberately bypassed the scheduled cable replacements on Crane 4 to save forty thousand dollars in maintenance costs; next came the banking flowcharts connecting Cole's Cayman accounts to twelve million dollars in stolen trust reserves; and finally, the surveillance footage of Marcus Bellman padlocking Maria Hayes’s apartment door four hours earlier.
The ballroom erupted into furious, deafening shouts.
City commissioners, appellate judges, and port directors shoved their chairs back in open revulsion, stepping away from Arthur Cole as if he were carrying a lethal contagion.
Marcus Bellman panicked. He grabbed his portfolio, attempting to bolt toward the kitchen service exit, but Marco Costa—Julian’s chief enforcer—stepped into his path, driving an iron forearm across Bellman’s chest, pinning the landlord to the carpet with effortless, crushing power.
Arthur Cole collapsed onto his knees on the dais, hyperventilating, his expensive aristocratic facade completely pulverized into dust.
"Julian... listen to me!" Cole wept, his hands coming up in a desperate, frantic plea. "The board pressured me! We were facing thirty million dollars in corporate liabilities from the crane collapse! If I paid the Hayes trust, the company would have been downgraded by Moody's! I did it to protect House Vance!"
Julian walked slowly up the carpeted stairs of the dais, stopping twelve inches from where Cole knelt in pathetic ruin.
"You didn't do it to protect House Vance, Arthur," Julian whispered, his voice dropping into a register of sub-zero granite. "You did it because you are a thief who let a brave man die, stole his widow's bread, and left a three-year-old child to freeze in the rain for forty dollars of late rent."
Julian reached down, picked up the ceremonial gold key of the Illinois Port Authority from the podium, and dropped it onto the floor at Cole's knees.

"Your name is erased from this city forever, Arthur."
Four federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel transport chains around Arthur Cole’s wrists and ankles, dragging the disgraced titan from his own podium as the entire assembly watched in stunned, condemning silence.
