Chapter 8 - The Reunion beneath the Star

At 3:15 AM, the private nursery suite on the third floor was bathed in the warm, amber glow of a small ceramic nightlight shaped like a sleepy star.

The room smelled of sweet baby powder, clean cotton sheets, and warm honey.

I pushed open the door with trembling fingers.

Tucked into the center of the massive four-poster bed, curled beneath a soft down quilt, was three-year-old Mia.

She wore her clean pink pajamas, her dark curls spread across the pillow, one chubby arm wrapped tightly around her faded ladybug backpack, her small chest rising and falling in deep, peaceful slumber.

A sob broke from my throat—a ragged, breathless sound of pure, miraculous deliverance.

I crossed the room, dropping onto both knees beside the mattress, reaching out with my bandaged hands to gently stroke her warm cheek.

Mia stirred.

Her long, dark eyelashes fluttered open. For half a second, her brown eyes were unfocused, clouded by sleep, before they locked onto my face.

A brilliant, radiant beam of pure, unshadowed childhood joy lit up her features.

"Mommy!" Mia squealed, scrambling out from under the quilt, throwing herself into my embrace.

I pulled my daughter into my arms, burying my face in her soft neck, inhaling the sweet, clean scent of her hair, weeping with the raw, overpowering agony and ecstasy of a mother who had returned from the dead to hold her world.

"I’m here, baby," I sobbed, rocking her back and forth against my chest. "Mommy is here. Mommy will never leave you again."

Mia patted my cheek with her small, warm hand, wiping away my tears, then proudly pointed toward her backpack.

"I gave the letter to the sad man, Mommy!" Mia whispered proudly. "He promised he would find you. Did he find you?"

A tall shadow stepped into the soft amber light of the nursery doorway.

Nathaniel Callaway stood with his hands in his pockets, leaning against the doorframe, watching us with eyes that were shining with unshed, reverent tears.

I looked up from my daughter’s curls, meeting his gaze with a heart full of boundless, eternal gratitude.

"Yes, sweetheart," I smiled through my tears, kissing Mia’s forehead. "He found us."
