Chapter 3 - The Atelier in the Loop

By 5:00 PM, the three hundred guests in the garden had been quietly dismissed under the cover of an "unforeseen security infrastructure malfunction." The black limousines and luxury sedans cleared the circular driveway under the watchful supervision of Enzo’s tactical operatives, leaving the Lake Forest estate encircled in cold rain and absolute tactical containment.

In the second-floor tactical operations room, Caleb Stone plugged a high-speed fiber diagnostic cable into a digital microscope analyzing the torn fabric of the wedding gown.

"The dress was designed by Maison de Valenciennes," Caleb reported, projecting the designer tags onto the wall display. "An exclusive haute-couture bridal atelier on Oak Street in the Gold Coast. The lead designer and owner is a French national named Henri Laurent."

Isabella sat on the leather sofa near the console, having changed into a tailored charcoal wool sweater and dark slacks provided by Ruth. Her hair was pulled back into a simple clip, her face pale but her gaze sharp and attentive.

"Henri did the final fitting himself yesterday afternoon at four o'clock," Isabella said, her voice steady. "My mother’s maid and two of my bridesmaids were in the fitting salon. The dress was packed into a reinforced cedar garment bag, sealed with a security tag, and placed in the trunk of my father's armored Mercedes."

"Did Laurent touch the dress after the fitting?" Ruth asked.

"He said he needed thirty minutes to steam the silk organza train in the back workshop," Isabella recalled, her brow furrowing. "He insisted on carrying the bag to the car himself."

I turned to Enzo. "Take Team Three. Breached entry on the Oak Street atelier. I want Henri Laurent, his client ledgers, his communication servers, and every security tape from that boutique over the last forty-eight hours."

"Already moving, Boss," Enzo said, tapping his earpiece as he strode out the door.

Thirty-five minutes later, Enzo’s voice crackled through the encrypted tactical audio bridge.

"Alessandro. We breached the rear service entrance of Maison de Valenciennes. The front retail space was dark, doors locked from the outside."

"Did you find Laurent?" I asked into the microphone.

"We found him," Enzo replied, his tone grim and flat. "In the basement cutting room. Bound to a hydraulic fabric press with industrial zip-ties. Single gunshot wound to the back of the head, close contact, small caliber. Time of death estimated within the last four hours."

Isabella gasped softly, her fingers tightening into the fabric of her sweater.

"There's more, Boss," Enzo continued. "The boutique's local security DVR was torn from the wall and submerged in a bucket of industrial solvent. But Caleb’s offsite backup protocol caught the external cloud sync before the hardware was destroyed. I’m transmitting the raw packet data to Stone’s terminal right now."

Caleb’s fingers flew across his mechanical keyboard.

The main monitor flickered as encrypted data streams reconstituted into high-resolution security video from the alleyway behind the Oak Street boutique, timestamped yesterday at 4:42 PM.

On the screen, Henri Laurent walked out the rear door carrying the ivory garment bag.

Waiting in the alley was a dark gray Audi sedan with tinted windows. A man in a dark trench coat stepped out of the driver's side. The man did not wear a mask, but his face was partially shadowed by a low-brimmed cap.

He handed Laurent a thick yellow envelope. Laurent unzipped the top of the garment bag, allowed the man to insert a heavy rectangular package wrapped in black velvet into the interior lining, and then Laurent re-sealed the zipper with a custom red plastic tag.

"Zoom in on the man in the trench coat," I commanded.

Caleb enhanced the image, running the facial geometry through our private biometric matching database.

When the resolution sharpened, the man’s face was fully illuminated under the amber alley lights.

Isabella’s breath caught in her throat.

"My God," she whispered, her voice trembling in pure, unadulterated horror. "That's... that's Franco."
