Chapter 9 - The Real Vows

Two weeks later, beneath a cloudless sapphire sky, the grand gardens of the Lake Forest estate were decorated with thousands of fresh white orchids, blooming hydrangeas, and fragrant lavender.

It was our wedding day.

There were no three-hundred-guest political lists, no armed bodyguards standing behind the hedges, and no corporate maneuvers.

There were only sixty of our closest friends, our loyal household staff, Vittorio, Matteo, Ruth Kaplan, Caleb Stone, and the working families who had stood with us through the storm.

A magnificent cedar arbor adorned with cascading white roses stood at the edge of the limestone terrace overlooking the sparkling blue expanse of Lake Michigan.

A string quartet played a sweet, triumphant Italian melody as Isabella walked down the petal-strewn aisle.

She wore an exquisite, custom-tailored gown of pure white silk organza, hand-stitched by a team of master seamstresses from Florence, falling in breathless, elegant folds to the stone floor. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves adorned with delicate pearl pins, her hazel eyes shining with boundless, radiant joy.

Walking before her, looking healthy, radiant, and full of unshadowed childhood happiness, was three-year-old Lucia, acting as our flower girl, wearing a pretty yellow linen dress and tossing rose petals from a silver basket with a proud, beaming smile.

I stood at the altar in a bespoke black tuxedo, my slate-gray eyes locked onto Isabella with an intensity that silenced the world.

When she reached my side, I took both of her hands into mine, her fingers warm, strong, and trembling with sacred devotion.

Father Thomas, a kind, retired parish priest from Chicago, smiled warmly as he raised his hands in blessing.

I took a slow, deep breath, my voice steady, rich, and vibrating with absolute, eternal love:

"Isabella," I said, looking deep into her eyes. "Two weeks ago, our world was surrounded by shadows and traps built by men who believed that cruelty was power. You stood before me with courage, truth, and unbroken dignity. Today, before God and our families, I give you my life, my name, and my soul. I promise to stand between you and every storm, to cherish your brilliant heart, and to love you with an unbroken, sovereign truth for all the days of our lives."

Tears of pure, radiant joy spilled down Isabella’s cheeks as she slipped the heavy platinum band onto my finger.

"Alessandro," Isabella smiled through her tears, her voice full of boundless peace. "You tore down the walls of suspicion to find the truth. You showed me that real power is the love that protects and the honor that never compromises. I choose you today, tomorrow, and for all the days of my life."

Father Thomas raised his hands in a quiet blessing. "By the power of love, truth, and restored honor, I pronounce you husband and wife."

I pulled Isabella into my arms, lifting her slightly off the stone terrace, and kissed her—a deep, sacred promise of an unbroken future built on truth, courage, and unconditional love.

The gathering erupted into thunderous, joyful applause, the sound joining with the gentle roar of Lake Michigan in a song of pure, triumphant joy.

Lucia let out a happy squeal, running forward to wrap her small arms around our legs, giggling as I scooped her up into our embrace, holding my wife and our little guardian against my heart as the sun turned the water to molten gold.
