Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the Lower Bay

The subterranean maintenance bay beneath the Lake Forest estate was a vast, cold cavern of reinforced concrete, industrial hydraulic lifts, and high-intensity overhead LED fixtures.
Franco Romano stood beside his black armored sedan, puffing nervously on a thin clove cigar, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his tailored cashmere overcoat.
Beside him stood Vittorio and Matteo, both looking bewildered by the sudden directive to relocate to the lower garage.
"What is the meaning of this theater, Vittorio?" Franco demanded, his voice raspy and agitated. "The guests have been sent home! The alliance is fractured! We should return to our compound in Oak Park and mobilize our crews before the Morettis launch a preemptive strike!"
"The Morettis don't need a preemptive strike, Franco," a voice echoed from the darkness of the service ramp.
I walked down the concrete incline, flanked by Enzo, Caleb Stone, and Ruth Kaplan.
Walking beside me, wearing a sharp navy wool coat with her chin lifted in absolute, unyielding defiance, was Isabella.
Franco froze. The clove cigar slipped from his lips, hitting the wet concrete floor with a faint hiss.
"Isabella...?" Franco stammered, taking an involuntary step backward against the fender of his car. "What... what are you doing with him? Vittorio, your daughter has turned against her own blood!"
Vittorio stepped forward, his massive frame radiating confusion and mounting fury. "Alessandro! What is this? Why are we in the basement?"
Caleb Stone didn't say a word. He placed a ruggedized tactical tablet onto the hood of Franco’s sedan, tapping the touchscreen once.
The high-definition video from the Oak Street alleyway illuminated the screen: Franco handing the yellow envelope to Henri Laurent, taking the suppressed Browning Hi-Power from his coat, and watching the tailor slide the weapon into the lining of Isabella’s gown.
Next came the synchronized audio recording captured forty minutes earlier by Caleb’s digital wiretap on Franco’s burner phone:
Franco: "The wedding was interrupted! Some maid's brat pulled the seam! The gun is in Moretti's hands!"
Rival Syndicate Boss: "Did Laurent talk?"
Franco: "Laurent is dead in his basement. But if Moretti audits the dress, he will trace the stitching back to the Gold Coast. Move our crews to the Calumet terminal immediately. We take the docks by force tonight."
The silence inside the concrete bay was absolute, suffocating, and terrifying.
Vittorio Romano stared at the screen.

The seventy-year-old patriarch looked as though an invisible broadsword had been driven straight through his sternum. His breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps, his face shifting from flushed confusion to an ashen, murderous fury that shook his entire body.
"Franco..." Vittorio whispered, his voice trembling with a grief so profound it sounded like tearing metal. "You put a gun on my daughter? You murdered my tailor... to steal my docks?"
