Chapter 8 - The Russo Sovereign Trust

The following morning, the sun rose over Lake Michigan in brilliant, blinding shafts of gold, illuminating the quiet waters and the manicured gardens of the estate.

At ten o'clock, the private executive conference room on the second floor was convened for a private family session.

Vittorio Romano, Matteo Romano, Ruth Kaplan, Caleb Stone, Elena Russo, and I sat around the cherrywood table.

Ruth Kaplan placed a thick, gold-embossed leather portfolio onto the center of the table, stamped with the joint crests of the Moretti and Romano families.

"Under the emergency restructuring ratified by both family councils at dawn," Ruth announced, "the eighty million dollars recovered from Franco Romano's seized offshore accounts has been permanently liquidated and transferred into the newly established Lucia Russo Sovereign Endowment."

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, tears instantly welling in her eyes. "Mr. Moretti... Mr. Romano... I cannot accept this. I am only a housekeeper. Lucia was just pulling on a pretty dress—"

"Elena," Vittorio Romano spoke, his deep, gravelly voice rich with absolute sincerity. "Your daughter prevented thirty good men from dying on that lawn yesterday. She prevented me from waging a war that would have destroyed my family."

Vittorio slid a certified property deed across the table.

"This is the title deed to a beautiful four-bedroom colonial home on three acres in Highland Park," Vittorio continued. "Paid in full, with a lifetime maintenance annuity and an executive appointment as Director of Household Operations for both family estates."
