Chapter 10 - The Unshakable Foundation

Back at the federal field office, the clock on the wall read 9:15 PM.

The bullpen was mostly empty, save for the hum of computer terminals and the distant ring of desk phones. Agent Elena Vance sat at her metal desk, reviewing the seizure manifests from the Sterling Terminal, her red pen making decisive checkmarks down the column of illegal chemical crates.

Her cheek still bore the faint, pale shadow where Vanessa Harrington had struck her three days ago—a permanent reminder of the entitlement and arrogance that poisoned the city's corporate elite.

She didn't regret a single second of it.

The Harrington empire was gone, its assets seized, its leaders facing federal prison. And the Sterling syndicate—the much larger, more dangerous monster operating in the shadows of the port—was now squarely in her crosshairs.

She knew the risks. She knew that men like Marcus Sterling didn't go down quietly, and she knew that the weeks ahead would bring political pressure, threats, and attempts to intimidate her.

She didn't care.

Her phone chimed on the desk, displaying an encrypted text message from Director Thomas:

“Vance, U.S. Attorney’s office just signed off on the full corporate subpoena for Sterling Logistics. You have full clearance to bring them down.”

Elena smiled. She picked up her pen, signed the bottom of the manifest, and closed the file.

She stood up, grabbed her charcoal overcoat from the back of her chair, and draped it over her shoulders. She looked out the window of the federal building toward the glittering, restless lights of Chicago stretching out into the dark night.

They thought they owned the city. They thought their money, their lawyers, and their family names could buy them immunity from the law.

But as Elena stepped out of her cubicle and walked down the quiet hallway toward the exit, she knew the truth.

No matter how high the walls of corruption were built, no matter how deep the money was buried, an unshakeable foundation of truth would always find a way to break through the concrete. And she was just getting started.
