Chapter 5 - The Eviction

The afternoon shadows lengthened across the Chicago skyline, casting long, somber bars of light through the glass windows of Harrington Motors.

Inside the showroom, the atmosphere was thick with the suffocating weight of an empire falling apart. Two federal marshals stood near the front entrance, their presence a silent, undeniable testament that the Harrington family’s immunity had officially expired.

Arthur Harrington sat slumped in a leather chair inside his glass-walled corner office, staring blankly at his computer screen. His corporate credit cards had been frozen by federal order thirty minutes prior; his primary banking accounts were locked under emergency asset-seizure warrants; and his chief financial officer had already packed his briefcase and walked out the back door, offering no goodbye.

Outside in the showroom, Vanessa sat on the edge of a display podium, her makeup completely ruined, staring mindlessly at the polished concrete floor. None of the salesmen would look at her. The mechanics in the service bay had already stopped working, gathered in small groups to whisper about what would happen to their pensions.

Elena Vance walked into Arthur’s office without knocking. She didn't wait to be invited to sit. She stopped in front of his desk, placing her leather portfolio down with a firm, decisive thud.

"The asset inventory is complete," Elena said, her voice flat and professional. "Every vehicle on this floor, every computer in the administrative wing, and every file in the archives is now under federal receivership. You and your family are barred from entering these premises effective immediately."

Arthur slowly raised his head. The fierce, untouchable patriarch of downtown Chicago looked old, broken, and defeated.

"Is there... is there any way to settle this?" Arthur asked, his voice cracking. "A fine? Restitution? I can liquidate my personal properties—"

"You can discuss restitution with a federal judge in a courtroom, Mr. Harrington," Elena interrupted, showing no pity. "Right now, you need to call a cab and take your daughter home. Your reign over this city is finished."

Arthur swallowed hard, nodding once in utter defeat. He stood up slowly, grabbing his wool overcoat from the rack, and walked past Elena without another word.

He found Vanessa sitting on the display podium outside.

"Come on, Vanessa," Arthur said softly, his voice dead. "We're going home."

Vanessa looked up, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Home? Dad, what about the dealership? What about the gala this weekend? We can't just leave!"

"There is no dealership, Vanessa," Arthur said, pulling her gently by the arm. "There is nothing left."
