Chapter 2 - The Crossing of Lines

"Can I help you?" Vanessa’s voice cut through the quiet hum of the showroom, dripping with practiced condescension. "The public viewing area is restricted to scheduled appointments. If you’re looking for pre-owned inventory, the lot is around the back."

The stranger didn’t startle. She slowly turned her head, revealing calm, intelligent hazel eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. She didn’t look intimidated by Vanessa’s designer clothes or the heavy air of entitlement radiating from her.

"I’m not looking to buy," the woman replied, her voice steady and even. "I’m looking at the alignment of this door panel. For a flagship vehicle, the manufacturing tolerances are surprisingly sloppy."

Vanessa bristled. Nobody—least of all someone dressed in an off-the-rack coat—criticized Harrington merchandise on her watch.

"Excuse me?" Vanessa stepped closer, invading the woman’s personal space. "Do you have any idea what you’re looking at? This is a Harrington-certified import. Every vehicle on this floor has passed a rigorous inspection. People who can’t afford to be here usually don't know the difference, which is clearly your problem."

The stranger remained entirely unruffled. She closed her portfolio and looked Vanessa straight in the eye. "People who work here usually know better than to insult potential auditors."

"Auditors?" Vanessa scoffed, letting out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "You? An auditor? Look at you. You look like you wandered in off the bus stop looking for a handout. You have no business being in my showroom."

"Your showroom," the woman repeated calmly. "Is that what you call it?"

"Yes, my showroom," Vanessa snapped, her temper finally boiling over. "My family owns this entire block. We own the building, the inventory, and the licenses that allow people like you to even walk through these doors. So I am telling you, for the last time, get out."

When the stranger didn't move—choosing instead to calmly pull a small notebook from her coat pocket—Vanessa lost control. Driven by a lifetime of never being told no, she lashed out. With a sharp, stinging motion, Vanessa brought her hand across the stranger's cheek.

The slap echoed off the marble pillars, freezing the entire showroom in absolute, breathless silence.
