Chapter 6 - The Aftermath in the City

By the following morning, the news had exploded across every major financial publication and local news network in Illinois.

EMPIRE IN RUINS: FEDERAL AGENTS SEIZE HARRINGTON MOTORS AMID MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD PROBE.

HIGH-SOCIETY SCANDAL: VANESSA HARRINGTON FACES FELONY ASSAULT CHARGES AFTER ATTACKING FEDERAL INVESTIGATOR.

The sleek black sedan that Vanessa had guarded so jealously was now parked in a municipal impound lot, tagged with federal evidence seals. The gold lettering above the showroom entrance was being scraped off by a crew of workers in hardhats, the metal chipping away to reveal the bare stone beneath.

Inside the federal field office downtown, Agent Elena Vance sat at her desk, reviewing the final structural transcripts of the Harrington case files. Her cheek still carried a faint, yellowish bruise from the blow, but her mind was entirely focused on the broader investigation. The Harrington dealership wasn't an isolated incident; it was merely the tip of a much larger, systemic network of corporate corruption spanning three states.

Her direct supervisor, Director Thomas, walked past her cubicle, tossing a fresh manila folder onto the center of her desk.

"Good work on the Harrington takedown, Vance," Thomas said, leaning against the partition. "The U.S. Attorney’s office is already preparing the indictments. Arthur Harrington is looking at fifteen years; his daughter is facing felony assault and accessory charges."

"It shouldn't have taken this long," Elena said, opening the new folder. "They operated in plain sight for years because everyone in the district was too afraid of the family name to ask basic questions."

"Well, nobody's afraid of them anymore," Thomas smiled. "What’s your next target?"

Elena pulled out a corporate charter from the new folder, sliding it across her desk. The letterhead bore the seal of Sterling Logistics & Import, a massive shipping conglomerate operating out of the port terminals on the south side.

"Sterling Logistics," Elena said quietly. "They’ve had zero compliance audits in five years, yet their shipping volume has tripled. I'm heading down to the harbor docks this afternoon."

Thomas raised an eyebrow. "Careful, Vance. Sterling is even bigger than Harrington. Their lawyers eat federal investigators for breakfast."

"Good," Elena replied, standing up and slipping her badge into her coat pocket. "I like a challenge."
