Chapter 2 - The Stroller on the Landing

The afternoon sun beat down heavily on the manicured lawns of the Vance estate, casting long, lazy shadows across the stone patio. Inside, the heavy atmosphere of the morning had not dissipated; it hung in the air like static electricity before a summer thunderstorm. Victoria sat in the grand parlor, sipping iced tea while scrolling through her tablet, completely ignoring the soft, rhythmic fussing of her infant son, Leo, who was resting in his high-end designer stroller nearby.
Elena was finishing up her duties in the adjoining hallway, wiping down the polished wainscoting with a microfiber cloth. She kept a cautious distance, acutely aware of Victoria’s unpredictable moods. Just then, the heavy front door swung open, and Mark Vance strode into the foyer, loosening his tie as he tossed his briefcase onto the mahogany console table. Mark was a man carved from the same stone of ambition as his wife, yet beneath his corporate exterior lay a protective, if easily manipulated, devotion to his family.
"Rough day at the firm," Mark sighed, running a hand through his dark hair as he walked toward the parlor. "The merger is hitting snags with the regulatory board."
"You always manage to pull it off, darling," Victoria cooed, instantly transforming her demeanor into the picture of a supportive, loving wife. She set her tablet aside and stood up to greet him, pressing a delicate kiss to his cheek. "Just make sure your stress doesn't affect our dinner with the board members tomorrow night."
As Victoria moved toward Mark, her movement was once again careless, her designer handbag swinging wildly from her shoulder. The heavy strap clipped the handlebar of Leo’s stroller, which had been parked dangerously close to the top of the sweeping, grand staircase that led to the upper level.
The stroller jerked violently forward, its front wheels clearing the top step and tipping over the precipice.
Inside the stroller, baby Leo let out a terrified shriek as the heavy carriage began its terrifying, uncontrolled descent down the steep flight of wooden stairs, picking up speed with every tumbling bounce.
Victoria froze, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated panic. But she didn't move a muscle to help her child. Instead, her mind raced down a darker, more calculating path, spotting an opportunity to rid herself of the housekeeper she so deeply despised.
Elena, whose reflexes had been honed by years of working in chaotic environments, dropped her cleaning cloth instantly. Her heart leaped into her throat. Without a second thought for her own safety, she sprinted across the parlor and lunged down the grand staircase, throwing herself after the runaway stroller.
"Leo!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking with terror as she scrambled down the steps, her knees slamming hard against the sharp wooden edges.
The stroller was careening downward at a breakneck speed, about to crash violently against the marble floor at the bottom of the foyer. With a desperate, agonizing leap, Elena threw her body forward, hooking her arms around the heavy frame of the stroller just inches before it slammed into the base of the stairs. The impact jarred her entire body, sending a searing pain shooting up her spine, but she held on with every ounce of strength she possessed, bracing the carriage safely against her chest.
Baby Leo cried loudly, terrified by the motion, but completely unharmed.

Elena slumped against the bottom step, gasping for air, her arms trembling as she pulled the crying infant out of the carriage to comfort him. She pressed the baby gently against her shoulder, rocking him softly while her own hands shook from the adrenaline surge.
Before Elena could even catch her breath, the heavy silence of the foyer was shattered by Victoria’s shrill, theatrical scream, echoing down the staircase with devastating precision.
